How to replace the front crankshaft seal in V6 engine on 2003 through 2009 Toyota 4Runner?

Remove the crankshaft pulley. Slowly loosen the seal found at the timing chain cover by using a screwdriver or the seal removal tool, it is advisable to trim the lip of the crankshaft seal and put tape around the screwdriver blade to avoid spoiling the housing bore or the crankshaft, as doing this may lead to new seal leak. Lubricate and clean the bore in the timing chain cover and make sure the lip and outer edge of the new seal is also lubricated with engine oil or multi purpose grease. Using a seal driver or a socket with an outside diameter slightly smaller than that of the seal, carefully drive the new seal into place with a hammer, this should result to the square insertion of the seal and its proper flush setting on the surface of the timing chain cover, also make sure that the spring is well fixed after fitting the new seal. The crankshaft pulley should also be refitted, and the bolt should be tightened to the required level of turn. Last, turning on the engine and try to look at the front sealing area to determine if oil leakage is apparent.

How to remove and replace the front crankshaft seal in a four-cylinder engine on a 2005 through 2009 Toyota Tacoma?

Adjacent to it is the drivebelt which should be removed together with the fan shroud for enough clearance. You have to slacken the crankshaft pulley bolt while keeping the pulley on the crankshaft in its circular position using a strap wrench, chain wrench or a special one; you might need a special puller to get rid of the pulley. Make sure the puller has screws that fit into the holes of the pulley and not the claws that clamp around the edges of the pully. Measure the depth of the seal in the bore after you take out the pulley, then remove it gently with the help of a screwdriver or a seal removing tool, being keen not to scratch the crank shaft or the timing chain cover. Scrub the bore in the cover and put engine oil or multi-purpose grease on the outer circumference of the new seal. To remove the seal, use a seal driver or a socket with an outside diameter slightly less than the OD of the seal, and tap the new seal into the seat until it bottoms, giving it a square installation to the same depth as before with a check to see that the spring is in place. Put back the crankshaft pulley and the drivebelt, start up the engine to inspect whether there is oil leakage at the front seal.
