How to Replace a Crankshaft Seal on Toyota 4Runner?

The replacement of the engine rear oil seal requires users to first detach the automatic transmission assembly followed by the drive plate & ring gear sub-assembly removal using Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855) and 09330-00021 to support the crankshaft. The subsequent process involves removing eight bolts, front spacer, drive plate and rear spacer. You must melt the oil seal lip with a knife before extracting the oil seal through a screwdriver's tip which needs to be taped for safeguarding the crankshaft. Install new oil seals by applying MP grease to their lips then using Special Service Tool: 09223-78010 while hammering the oil seal until its surface matches the rear oil seal retainer edge. The drive plate ring gear sub-assembly installation requires the use of Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855) and 09330-00021 to hold the crankshaft while applying adhesive (Part No. 08833-00070, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent) to 2 or 3 threads of the mounting bolt end before installing the front spacer, drive plate, and rear spacer on the crankshaft. When reinstalling the automatic transmission assembly, first apply adhesive (Phase 3) to 2 or 3 threads of the mounting bolt end then tighten the 8 bolts uniformly according to the specified sequence to a torque of 83 Nm (846 kgf-cm, 61 ft. lbs.).

How to replace the Crankshaft Seal on Toyota Tacoma?

The procedure for replacing the engine rear oil seal (2TR-FE) requires unmounting of the manual transmission unit assembly, automatic transmission assembly and clutch cover assembly along with clutch disc assembly and flywheel sub-assembly. This process needs special service tools: 09213-54015 (91651-60855) and 09330-00021 to maintain crankshaft pulley stability during the removal of 10 bolts. The same tools should be used to maintain crankshaft pulley stability during automatic transmission drive plate component removal. Start by cutting the oil seal lip with a cutter knife and gently extracting it with a taped screwdriver while inspecting the crankshaft for damage and sanding it smooth with 400-grit sandpaper if required. New oil seal installation begins with applying MP grease to the lip followed by special service tool: 09223-15030 and 09950-70010 (09951-07150) together with a hammer to press the seal until it rests flush with the rear oil seal retainer edge while keeping it level and removing any excess grease. The flywheel sub-assembly reinstallation requires bolt cleaning followed by adhesive application (Part NO. 08833-00070, three bond 1324 or equivalent) on 2 to 3 bolt threads. After holding the crankshaft with special service tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 the bolts must be uniformly tightened to a torque of 27 Nm (270 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs.) in the specified sequence before painting the bolts then retightening by 90 degrees. If you wait at least one hour after installation continue with the following procedure to install the drive plate & ring gear sub-assembly. Follow the same cleaning and adhesive application steps refer to specified component installation guidelines then apply torque to 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.) for the specified bolt sequence before another one-hour waiting period. The last steps include installing the assembly in order of clutch disc assembly by using special service tool: 09301-00210 followed by clutch cover assembly, manual transmission unit assembly, and finally automatic transmission assembly while checking for engine oil leakage.
