Toyota Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the timing chain on Toyota 4Runner?
A: The service of the timing chain requires initial removal of the power steering link assembly then front differential carrier assembly on 4WD models and finally draining engine coolant and oil. The next step requires removal of the battery along with V-bank cover and upper radiator support seal through the removal of 11 clips. First disconnect the fluid coupling assembly before removing the fan and generator V belt afterward and continuing with the fluid coupling assembly removal. Remove the No. 2 ventilation hose while unfastening the air cleaner assembly and extracting both the oil level gauge guide and its gauge and O-ring. The vane pump assembly needs separation by disconnecting the P/S oil pressure switch connector and removing two bolts. Take care not to damage the pulley against any other component. Users must remove the generator assembly along with the cooler compressor assembly and V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly after unbolting 5 pieces and then disassemble both No. 2 and No. 1 idler pulley sub-assemblies. The crankshaft pulley removal requires Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to secure the pulley during bolt loosening before completely removing both components with a combination of 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05030). The No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly needs to be removed through the process of removing 10 bolts and 2 nuts while using Special Service Tool: 09032-00100 to cut off the applied sealer. Start the engine removal process by removing the oil strainer sub-assembly then the oil pan sub-assembly, intake air surge tank, ignition coil assembly along with both cylinder head cover sub-assemblies. The servicing steps begin with disconnecting the 2 connectors from the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly while removing 2 bolts before proceeding to remove the VVT sensor with the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly. Set No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression position by positioning the crankshaft set key on the cylinder block timing line while the camshaft timing gear marks must align with bearing caps. Before rotating the crankshaft remove the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly while using care and then take out the chain tensioner slipper followed by the No. 1 idle gear shaft and No. 2 chain vibration damper and chain sub-assembly. The installation process begins with the chain tensioner slipper and then leads to the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly but requires proper fixation of the stopper plate with a 3.5 mm bar. Install the chain sub-assembly by positioning the mark links with the timing marks before adding the No. 2 chain vibration damper, No. 1 idle gear shaft, and securing the No. 2 idle gear shaft with a 10 mm hexagon wrench. Position the timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal together with the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly and VVT sensor and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly before tightening all bolts to 10 Nm. The system combination includes both cylinder head cover sub-assemblies and ignition coil assembly and intake air surge tank. The oil pan sub-assembly installation requires removal of old packing materials and addition of fresh parts including an oil pump O-ring along with Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black or Three Bond 1207B or Equivalent seal packing materials applied before installing the assembly with 17 bolts and 2 nuts that should be equally tightened. Place the oil strainer sub-assembly with its new gasket before installing the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly while the process requires applying seal packing to all components then uniformly tightening bolts and nuts. To install the crankshaft pulley you need Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 and you should torque the pulley set bolt to 250 Nm. The installation of No. 1 idler pulley sub-assembly together with No. 2 idler pulley sub-assembly and V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly requires proper torque on all bolts. The last step includes installation of the cooler compressor assembly and generator assembly with vane pump assembly followed by connecting the P/S oil pressure switch connector then proceeding to attach the water inlet and oil level gauge guide until completion with air cleaner assembly installation and final connection of the No. 2 ventilation hose. Place a fluid coupling assembly followed by generator V belt installations then perform a fluid coupling assembly torque procedure and finally install the upper radiator support seal and battery alongside the front differential carrier assembly and power steering link assembly. Seamlessly install the V-bank cover by torquing it to 7.5 Nm while checking for leaks and also checking the ignition timing.
  • Q: How to remove the timing chain on Toyota Camry?
A: The first step for removing the timing chain from a 2AZ-FE engine requires users to disconnect the cable of the negative battery terminal. Remove the sequential parts including No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly, front wheel RH, engine under cover LH, engine under cover RH, and front fender apron seal RH. The driver should begin by draining the engine oil before he removes the front exhaust pipe assembly. The service requires removal of the No. 2 engine mounting stay RH followed by removing the engine moving control rod sub-assembly and the No. 2 engine mounting bracket RH. The technician should first remove the V-ribbed belt followed by the generator assembly then the vane pump assembly and ignition coil assembly. The ventilation hoses need disconnecting before uninstalling the cylinder head cover sub-assembly through removal of its 2 bolts and 8 bolts and 2 nuts. Locate the No. 1 cylinder at its TDC/Compression position before you remove both the crankshaft pulley and crank position sensor. The oil pan sub-assembly removal requires the removal of 12 bolts along with 2 nuts from the main assembly before using an oil pan seal cutter to precisely cut through the sealer. The process to remove the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly demands care because turning the crankshaft should only happen when the assembly is present. Connect engine hangers through bolts before torquing them to 38 Nm (387 kgf-cm, 28 ft-lbf) and link a sling device to the hangers along with a chain block. The V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly can be removed after lifting the engine with a chain block before proceeding to detach the engine mounting insulator by securing a chain hoist to the hangers. Start by handling the engine mounting bracket RH and after that the timing chain cover sub-assembly then follow with the timing chain case oil seal removal. Drive out the crankshaft position sensor plate as well as the chain tensioner slipper and No. 1 chain vibration damper and timing chain guide. After disconnecting the chain sub-assembly you should take out the crankshaft timing sprocket. To finish the procedure you need to turn the crankshaft 90 degrees counterclockwise until the adjusting hole of the oil pump drive shaft sprocket lines up with the oil pump groove, insert a 4 mm diameter bar to secure the gear, and afterward remove the nut and bolt, chain tensioner plate, spring, chain tensioner, oil pump driven sprocket, and chain.
  • Q: How to remove and install the timing chain on Toyota Tacoma?
A: Start the removal of the timing chain by first unclipping the engine under cover and draining the engine oil. The front differential and drive shafts and generator drive belt and fluid coupling fan and water pump pulley must be detached before beginning the work in 4WD models. The procedure starts with separating the cylinder head assembly followed by divorcing the A/C compressor along with bracket through the elimination of 4 bolts while suspending the compressor. Remove the 4 bolts followed by disconnection of the A/C compressor bracket then proceed with generator connector disconnection followed by the removal of a nut and wire clip which allows generator extraction along with its adjusting bar and bracket. To remove the crankshaft position sensor use appropriate tools to take out its two bolts with O-ring. During 2WD model replacement the 8 bolts must be removed from the stiffener plates. The technician should remove the flywheel housing under cover and dust seal before taking out the oil pan by unthreading 16 bolts and 2 nuts using SST 09032-00100 to cut off the applied sealer. The oil strainer and crankshaft pulley with SST 09213-54015 and 09330-00021 tools need to be removed by loosening water bypass pipe nuts and timing chain cover bolts. SST 09950-40011 allows the operator to remove No.1 timing chain and camshaft timing sprocket followed by crankshaft timing sprocket. The maintenance proceeds with removal of No.1 timing chain tensioner slipper and No.1 vibration damper as well as the crankshaft position sensor rotor and timing chain oil jet on 2RZ-FE models. Installation of balance shaft drive gear and shaft along with No.2 timing chain and No.2 crankshaft timing sprocket requires the removal of No.2 and No.3 vibration dampers as well as the No.2 chain tensioner for 3RZ-FE models. Check the timing chains and sprockets for elongation while measuring diameters of sprockets with vernier calipers. To inspect the parts correctly check the chain tensioner slipper and vibration dampers for wear while inspecting that the oil jet operates smoothly besides No.1 and No.2 chain tensioners. Start with positioning the No.1 cylinder at top dead center and installing the No.4 vibration damper, followed by the No.2 timing chain, balance shaft drive gear and shaft while aligning the timing marks before installing the No.2 crankshaft timing sprocket. Everything necessary for installation includes the No.2 chain tensioner followed by the No.2, No.3 vibration dampers and finally the No.1 timing chain tensioner slipper and No.1 vibration damper. Insert the crankshaft timing sprocket together with the No.1 timing chain before securing them with a cord. Replace the timing chain cover with new gaskets and install the crankshaft pulley after which you should install the oil strainer and oil pan with new packing. Fitting the flywheel housing under cover and dust seal should be followed by 2WD model stiffener plate installation. The implementation order includes crankshaft position sensor along with generator and adjusting bar and bracket and concludes with A/C compressor and its bracket. The final steps include placing the cylinder head assembly and water pump pulley together with the fan equipped with fluid coupling and generator drive belt. Engine oil filling will take place as the technician starts the engine to detect potential leaks. Afterward, the engine under cover installation occurs followed by a vehicle road test to verify normal operation and check for abnormal noises. Inspect both engine coolant and oil reservoirs again.
