Toyota Avalon Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Timing Chain on Toyota Avalon?
A: Service or repair operations for the Timing Chain on the 2GR-FE engine begin with taking off the engine assembly with transaxle and engine wire and components such as front frame assembly and starting device and automatic transmission unit. Following steps include the removal sequence of the oil level gauge guide sub-assembly through disassembly of the oil level gauge and bolt and No.1 and No.2 oil level gauge guides together with the two O-rings. SST 09213-7001 (09213-70020) and SST 09330-00021 along with 09330-00021 are required to extract the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly before setting the engine assembly on the engine stand. Use SST 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00700) to remove the subassembly of idler pulley No.2 together with engine mounting bracket RH and V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly. Also use it to detach water pump pulley from 5 bolts. The technician should follow these steps to remove the timing gear cover No.2 engine mounting stay No.2 RH engine mounting bracket front No.1 LH water inlet housing and crankshaft pulley by first holding it with SST while using SST 09213-70011 (09213-70020), 09330-00021 to loosen the pulley set bolt followed by removing the crankshaft pulley using the pulley set bolt and SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). Use SST to cut the applied sealer before removing the 18 bolts and 2 nuts from oil pan sub-assembly No.2. The technician should remove the oil strainer sub-assembly and oil pan sub-assembly during maintenance while performing cleanups of all bolts and stud bolts with inspections for any damage. Early separation requires the removal of the intake air surge tank and igniter coil assembly together with oil pipes No.1 and No.2, RH and LH cylinder head cover sub-assembly, timing chain cover sub-assembly, and finally the timing chain cover oil seal. Secure No.1 cylinder at TDC/compression position with a temporary bolting of the pulley set bolt while lining up the timing marks. Remove the chain tensioner assembly No.1 from its position after you activate its lock and push the plunger forward then dismantle the chain tensioner slipper with its chain sub-assembly after releasing the crankshaft timing gear torque. Motorists must install the new chain sub-assemblies while properly aligning both the mark plate with timing mark while keeping the chain outside of the crankshaft position. Install the chain tensioner slipper assembly No.1 with the timing marks properly positioned to the crankshaft TDC/compression position. You should install the timing chain cover sub-assembly along with the water inlet housing and engine mounting bracket front No.1 LH within 15 minutes after applying FIPG to the timing chain cover using SST 09316-60011 (09316-00011). The installation process includes sub-assemblies of cylinder head cover LH and RH with oil pipes No.2 and No.1 as well as an Ignition Coil assembly and intake air surge tank. A proper installation of the oil pan sub-assembly requires packing replacement and the application of new seal packing before installing the crankcase within a 3-minute timeframe after new seal packing. Sew the oil pan into place using 16 bolts and 2 nuts before you attach the oil strainer sub-assembly with fresh gasket material. Use seal packing on oil pan sub-assembly No.2 before installing it through 16 bolts and 2 nuts. The crankshaft pulley installation requires SST while the pulley set bolt reaches 250 Nm (2,549 kgf-cm, 184 ft. lbs.) torque and the procedures continue with engine mounting stay No.2 RH, timing gear cover No.2, and water pump pulley installation with SST. After correctly torquing the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly bolts you should add the engine mounting bracket RH followed by idler pulley sub-assembly No.2 then complete the procedure by reversing the previous steps to install the engine assembly with transaxle starter assembly front frame assembly and engine wire.
