Toyota Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the timing belt on Toyota 4Runner?
    A:
The first step to replace the 2UZ-FE timing belt requires draining the engine coolant and separating the negative terminal from the battery. You should begin by taking off the 2 nuts from the throttle body cover sub-assembly before removing the air cleaner hose assembly together with the radiator support seal upper using the 11 clips. Start by unfastening each clip and the 2 hose clamps which enable separation of the 2 oil cooler hoses from the fan shroud followed by the removal of the 3 bolts needed to detach the fan shroud from the radiator before finally removing the 4 nuts to separate the fan with fluid coupling from the engine. Together remove the fan shroud and fan with fluid coupling from the vehicle along with the fan pulley. Open the vacuum hose to remove the vane pump assembly's nut along with its 2 bolts while hanging the hoses rather than detaching them. Remove the generator assembly followed by disconnecting the compressor connector before taking off the nut and 3 bolts and compressor stay and compressor while carefully hanging up the hoses. Uninstall the No. 2 idler pulley sub-assembly which requires removal of the pulley bolt and idler pulley and cover plate before disconnecting three hoses and removing bolt then nut and oil cooler pipe. Start by opening the 4 bolts which secure the No. 3 timing belt cover sub-assembly LH after disconnecting the cam position sensor connector. Proceed with removing the No. 2 timing chain or belt cover after removing its nut and 3 bolts. Subsequently remove the sub-assembly by dismantling the 2 bolts. Disconnect the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly following bolt removal and disassembly of the two nuts and detach the fan bracket sub-assembly by unfastening the two nuts and two bolts. To remove the pulley bolt from the crankshaft damper sub-assembly use Special Service Tools: 09213-70011 and 09213-70020 followed by the crankshaft pulley removal with Special Service Tools: 09950-50013 and 09951-05010. Start the timing belt removal by uninstalling the four bolts from the No. 1 cover then proceed to take off the 1st crankshaft position sensor plate. Before dismantling the timing belt check for three installation marks distributed on the belt surface while the crankshaft turns. The No. 1 cylinder requires an initial positioning to approximately 50 degrees BTDC/compression. The engine technician sets crankshaft position at 50 degrees BTDC/compression while aligning both crankshaft timing pulley marks with oil pump body and verifies proper camshaft pulley and timing belt plate alignment. A single complete crankshaft turn must occur before rotating it counterclockwise halfway towards the 50 degrees position. Begin by alternatively loosening and finally removing the 2 bolts and chain tensioner unit with dust boot. Complete the removal process by operating Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 to relax the camshaft timing pulley (RH bank) tension versus the crankshaft timing pulley through counterclockwise rotation and separate the timing belt from the No. 1 timing belt idler to extract the timing belt.
  • Q: How to remove and install the timing belt on Toyota Tacoma?
    A:
The first step for a timing belt removal involves removing the engine under cover and draining the engine coolant before disconnecting the upper radiator hose. The PS pump requires disconnection from the engine through removing air hoses from the air intake chamber and resonator combined with release of the PS pressure tube clamp bolt from the frame and detaching the drive belt and lastly unbolting and unning the PS pump. The next step demands removal of the A/C compressor engine connection through its connector and drive belt together with four bolts. First disconnect the fan equipment which includes fluid coupling and fan pulleys then eliminate the generator drive belt and extract the No.2 fan shroud from the engine. First step is to eliminate the fan through the fluid coupling and pulleys while then removing five bolts on the A/C compressor bracket. The four high-tension clamps on the timing belt cover need release before removing six bolts to access the sensor connector of the camshaft position. The procedure begins with removing the fan bracket by first detaching the nut and PS pump adjusting strut followed by removing the bolt, nut and bracket. Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (90119-08216), 09330-00021 should be used for loosening the crankshaft pulley bolt before removing Special Service Tool: 09950-50011 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05031), pulley bolt and pulley from the crankshaft pulley. The tool can be used together with a service bolt to remove the pulley when necessary. Start the procedure by detaching the two bolts of the starter wire bracket then the four bolts of the No.1 timing belt cover. Set the No.1 cylinder at TDC/compression point by first temporarily installing a crankshaft pulley bolt to turn the crankshaft for proper alignment with the timing marks while checking the timing pulleys of the camshafts and the No.3 timing belt cover alignment. A thorough check of the timing belt should be performed to count three existing installation marks with a front marker; new marks must be installed before timing belt removal. To remove the timing belt tensioner you should alternately loosen its two bolts before taking out the timing belt. To remove the RH camshaft timing pulley bolt, Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) should be used for bolt loosening before removing the bolt and knock pin and timing pulley. The process should be repeated for the LH camshaft timing pulley. Convert the 10 mm hexagon wrench to remove the pivot bolt which will enable the removal of the idler pulley together with its plate washer. The crankshaft timing pulley requires Special Service Tool 09950-50011 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05031) alongside a service bolt if necessary for removal. Examine the timing belt for any defects taking note of its condition to check if it remains free from bending and twisting while staying clear of oil water and steam. Verify there is no damage or wear present. The idler pulleys need inspection for oil leakage while their smooth operation must be checked as well as the timing belt tensioner's inspection for oil leakage and push rod movement evaluation. Check the push rod length using a measurement tool which should be between 10.0 mm and 10.8 mm (0.394 inch and 0.425 inch). Installation begins by positioning the crankshaft timing pulley set key into the relevant groove and following with the No.1 idler pulley installation at 35 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.) torque and the No.2 idler pulley at 40 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.). Use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to install the pulley bolts through the camshaft timing pulleys with a torque of 110 Nm (1,100 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.). Position the camshaft flange sides facing outward. Proceed to install the timing belt by placing the No.1 cylinder at TDC/compression while maintaining the belt clean and properly oriented with its timing marks. Attach the timing belt tensioner using 1.27mm hexagon wrench on the push rod then bolt down the tensioner components with 27Nm (280kgf-cm, 20ft.lbs.) torque. Align the timing marks to check valve timing and secure the timing belt guide, No.1 timing belt cover and starter wire bracket so that all gaskets remain in good condition. Install the crankshaft pulley using Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (90119-08216), 09330-00021 and tighten it with 295 Nm (3,000 kgf-cm, 217 ft. lbs.) torque before installing the fan bracket, No.2 timing belt cover, oil dipstick and guide, and A/C compressor bracket according to specified torque settings. After installing the fan with fluid coupling and fan pulleys for temporary use you should put on the No.2 fan shroud followed by adjusting the generator drive belt before securing the fan with fluid coupling and fan pulleys to 5.4 Nm (54 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Tighten all bolts that secure the engine connection of the A/C compressor and PS pump to the specified torque standards. Attend to the last step by reconnecting the upper radiator hose before adding coolant to the engine then starting it for leak detection followed by engine under cover reinstallation then conducting a road test and verifying the engine coolant level.
