Toyota Avalon Wheel Hub Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear Wheel Hub and Wheel Bearing on Toyota Avalon?
A: Start rear wheel hub bearing and rear wheel hub bearing service by disconnecting the rear wheel and taking apart the rear disc Brake Caliper assembly LH while removing both the bolt and flexible hose from the Shock Absorber and detaching the two caliper assembly bolts. Employ a dial indicator to check rear wheel hub bearing looseness near its center with a 0.05 mm (0.0020 in.) maximum tolerance. The dial indicator must be directly perpendicular to the measurement surface. Replace the wheel hub assembly if the measurement exceeds the specified limit. The rear wheel hub runout should be checked on the surface outside the bolt with a maximum tolerance of 0.07 mm (0.0027 in.). This measurement requires a perpendicular alignment of the dial indicator. Replacing the wheel hub assembly is necessary when runout limits are exceeded. The repair requires reinstallation of the rear disc followed by tightening the two bolts securing the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH at 62 N m (632 kgf cm, 46 ft. lbf). Also avoid twisting the brake hose during installation. Installation of the rear flexible hose needs a torque setting of 19 N m (192 kgf cm, 14 ft. lbf). To finish the installation process replace the rear wheel while applying a torque of 103 N m (1,050 kgf cm, 76 ft. lbf) along with verifying proper connection of the ABS speed sensor signal. The removal and installation processes for the RH side mirror the steps already observed on the LH side. The installer should first secure the four bolts on the rear wheel hub & bearing assembly LH at 80 N m (816 kgf cm, 59 ft. lbf) torque before properly connecting the skid control sensor without twisting the wire.
