Toyota Avalon Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the Shock Absorber on Toyota Avalon?
A: Service and repair of the suspension strut begins by using two nuts and a bolt on the bracket to secure the shock absorber in a vise at the lower side followed by coil spring compression using Special Service Tool: 09727-30021. Do not use an impact wrench because it could damage the tool. Begin the coil spring service by first removing the nut and then the collar and suspension support and coil spring and lower insulator and spring bumper in succession. Use the rod of the shock absorber to check for strange sounds or resistance during extension and compression movements; when issues occur it is necessary to replace the shock absorber with a new unit. When disposing the shock absorber extend its rod fully and drill a hole into the cylinder to release gas with caution about flying particles while recognizing that the gas has no color or smell and is not toxic. Reassembly begins with installing the lower insulator while the spring bumper attaches to the piston rod. Use Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 to recompress the coil spring before fitting it onto the shock absorber with its lower end entering the lower insulator gap. You should begin by fitting the suspension support onto the piston rod then add the collar and loosely attach a new nut before rotating the suspension support in the proper direction as specified. Use Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 to remove the tool then inspect the orientation of the suspension support one more time.
