Scion Shift Cable connects the gear lever with the transmission, providing sharp and reliable gear shifts. In 2003, Scion went out on the streets talking directly to first-time buyers who wanted to make a quick choice and a style that won't tax their wallets. Scion, unlike its stuffy competitors, enticed gamers with a virtual city, music drops, and Release Series colors that disappeared quickly. That buzz had turned Scion showrooms into test labs where new ideas would make it out of the concept onto the road without long committee consultations. More than 1,000,000 units were launched before 2016 although the spirit of customization and face-to-face communication continues to generate imitators throughout the sector. Customers liked the hassle-free pricing, the small footprint that occupied small parking spaces, and the ability to make each ride personal. Even now, applied models have been heavily trading on that history of individuality and worth. Within each of the gearbox tunnels, the Shift Cable is subjected to a constant push-pull force, with steel strands passing through a covered conduit such that every notch of the selector clicks with no slop despite years of stop-and-go traffic. Due to the desire of Scion drivers to have lively response, the Shift Cable is fitted with corrosion-resistant liners that shake off road spray and winter salt. A Teflon-coated core shaves off friction allowing the Shift Cable to transmit hand motion to gear engagement with quick and positive feedback. In case stretching or fraying are ever introduced, a replacement of the Shift Cable is sure to get factory accuracy in a few minutes and discourage grinding.

Scion Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Shift Cable assembly on Scion xA?
    A:
The process to replace the transmission control cable assembly begins by removing the console box rear cover before taking out the console box carpet and then the rear console box assembly. Proceed by removing the front exhaust pipe assembly followed by removal of the front No. 1 floor heat insulator and the air cleaner assembly. Set aside the transmission control cable assembly by first undoing the cable nut that connects to the floor shift assembly before taking off the cable from the shift lever plate with a screwdriver and then removing the 3 bolts before removing the cable from the body. First disconnect the cable from the control shaft lever by removing the nut before detaching it from the control cable bracket then cutting it free from the transmission control cable support. The same cable first installs to the control shaft lever with its nut fastened before connecting it to the bracket through a new clip for a final attachment to the transmission control cable support. Thirdly, tighten the three body bolts to 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.) before fastening the shift lever plate and fitting it to the floor shifted transmission while torquing to 2 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Perform the installation sequence by first putting back the air cleaner assembly followed by the front No. 1 floor heat insulator before adding the front exhaust pipe assembly. The repair sequence includes adjusting the shift lever together with inspecting it before reinstalling the rear console box assembly followed by the console box carpet and concluding with the console box rear cover.
  • Q: How to install the Shift Cable assembly for the U341E automatic transaxle on Scion xD?
    A:
Installation of the transmission control cable assembly for the U341E automatic transaxle starts with coupling it to the control shaft lever through a nut torque to 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf). Before attachment to the control cable bracket install a new clip while keeping the cable marking properly aligned with the bracket slit. The assembly should be connected to the transmission control cable support following route placement between the support and the vehicle body. Install 3 nuts at 5.0 Nm of torque (51 kgf-cm or 44 in-lbf) before turning the nut while pushing in the lock. Attach the assembly to the shift lever retainer with the cable outer protruding upward while making sure the lock extends past area A-A. Align the adjusting mechanism lock on the left-hand side of the vehicle during attachment to the transmission floor shift assembly. Use a torque wrench to fix the front NO. 1 floor heat insulator with 2 bolts and a nut reaching 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 in-lbf). Afterwards install the front exhaust pipe assembly and follow it with the air cleaner bracket and then the air cleaner assembly. Install the battery after taking out its tray. Check and position the shift lever to reach its proper setting if needed. Assemble the front console box followed by installing the rear console box sub-assembly while also adding the console box carpet before placing on the rear console box cover and upper console panel and verify exhaust gas leak performance.
