2006 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2006 Toyota Matrix?
A: Motorists should begin brake master cylinder overhaul by draining off the brake fluid after cleaning up any dripped fluid instantly on painted areas. The air cleaner cap must be separated from the brake master cylinder assembly through cord disconnections that should include the brake fluid level switch connector and manual transmission's clutch reservoir tube No. 1. Special Service Tool 09023-00101 disengages the two brake tubes from the master cylinder sub-assembly before two or three brake tubes from No.1 way get disconnected. Then remove the master cylinder and No.1 way by taking out the two nuts while checking the valve bracket. You must disassemble the brake master cylinder reservoir sub-assembly by removing its stopper screw together with the cap, strainer and both grommets from the master cylinder sub-assembly. The procedure for taking out the brake master cylinder kit begins by placing the master cylinder sub-assembly in a vise with aluminum plates while carefully extracting the O-ring and gently pushing in the piston before using snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring in a manner that prevents fluid spatter. Models without VSC require pushing the piston to remove both the piston stopper bolt and gasket while models with VSC need pushing the piston to remove the straight pin. Remove the first piston by striking it against wooden blocks apart from the stopper without scratching the body interior. A thorough check of the brake master cylinder must be performed for any signs of scratching and new sub-assembly installation should be considered. Install the brake master cylinder sub-assembly into the vise between aluminum plates after applying lithium soap base glycol grease on the rubber parts and inserting the No.1 and No.2 pistons with caution to prevent damage. The piston installation requires pushing the piston first then installing a new gasket and piston stopper bolt which demands 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft. lbs.) torque for models without VSC; while models with VSC will need a straight pin inserted after piston pushing with proper installation. Install the hole snap ring to the master cylinder body after applying it with the piston pushed in. Then install a new O-ring applying lithium soap base glycol grease before installation. Mount the strainer and cap to the reservoir sub-assembly after which you need to grease both grommets followed by their installation on the master cylinder body before installing the stopper screw. The brake booster push rod adjustment requires the use of Special Service Tool: 09737-00013 to lower the rod until the piston is touched before measuring the clearance with chalk that must be between -0.21 to 0 mm (-0.0083 to 0 inch). Check the clearance again after turning the rod tip with a 7 mm socket driver while holding it with Special Service Tool: 09737-00020. The process ends with installing the master cylinder sub-assembly together with the No.1 way through torquing two nuts to 12.5 Nm (127 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). After this step, use Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 for connecting the brake tubes at 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). For manual transmission, reconnect the No.1 clutch reservoir tube before attaching the brake fluid level switch connector. Installation of the air cleaner cap sub-assembly along with brake fluid reservoir filling must be followed by master cylinder and brake line bleeding followed by checking the fluid level and inspecting for any brake fluid leakage.
