2005 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2005 Toyota Matrix?
A: The brake master cylinder overhaul process begins with draining the brake fluid while immediately cleaning painted surfaces affected by spills. Start by disconnecting the level switch connector and proceeding to slide the clip for manual transmission clutch reservoir tube No. 1. Then remove the air cleaner cap sub-assembly and brake master cylinder sub-assembly. The Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 helps disconnect two brake tubes from the master cylinder sub-assembly along with two or three brake tubes from the No. 1 way. Take out the two nuts to pull the master cylinder sub-assembly with No. 1 way while inspecting the valve bracket. The brake master cylinder reservoir sub-assembly can be removed by extracting the stopper screw followed by the cap and strainer and the two grommets from the master cylinder sub-assembly. Proceed to remove the brake master cylinder kit after placing the master cylinder sub-assembly into a vise with aluminum plates then removing the O-ring before pushing the piston and using snap ring pliers to extract the snap ring in a manner that prevents fluid spatter. You must push in the piston first and then remove the piston stopper bolt with its gasket for models without VSC and perform the same operation on VSC models by removing the straight pin while the cylinder body is oriented upside down with a shop rag to protect the components. Pull the No. 1 piston straight out before tapping its flange against wooden blocks until the No. 2 piston end emerges and proceed to pull it straight out without causing body cylinder scratches. Any detected scratches on the brake master cylinder require the replacement of the entire master cylinder sub-assembly. The installation process starts with putting aluminum plates inside the vise and applying lithium soap base glycol grease to rubber components before inserting the No. 1 and No. 2 pistons with great care to prevent damage to their parts. Models without VSC require the piston to be pushed in before installing a new gasket along with the piston stopper bolt at 10 Nm torque but models with VSC need installation of the straight pin with the piston pushed in properly. First install and lodge the hole snap ring with the piston fully compressed before applying lithium soap base glycol grease to a new O-ring for its installation into the master cylinder body. The next procedure requires installation of the brake master cylinder reservoir sub-assembly by adding the strainer and cap then applying grease to grommets before securing the reservoir with a stopper screw. The brake booster push rod adjustment requires placement of Special Service Tool: 09737-00013 on the master cylinder where the technician should lower the rod until it makes slight contact with the piston before applying chalk and making length adjustments with Special Service Tool: 09737-00020 by using a 7 mm socket driver. The installation of the master cylinder sub-assembly and No. 1 way requires tightening both valve bracket nuts to 12.5 Nm (127 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) followed by using Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to torque brake tubes to 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) and reconnecting the clutch reservoir tube No. 1 for manual transmissions before attaching the brake fluid level switch connector. After mastering the air cleaner cap sub-assembly finish the procedure through a combination of reservoir brake fluid addition, master cylinder and brake line bleeding and measuring fluid levels and performing a brake fluid leakage check.
