2006 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on 2006 Toyota Matrix?
A: Draining brake fluid should be the first step before brake booster vacuum replacement because any fluid which touches painted areas needs cleaning off. First disconnect both the sub-assemblies of air cleaner cap and air cleaner case by removing their 3 bolts and air cleaner element. The installation process starts with using Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to take out the brake master cylinder sub-assembly before disconnecting the brake master cylinder push rod clevis. Unplug the cruise control actuator assembly through the process of removing two nuts and one bolt then placing it on the side for later use. The brake booster assembly removal process begins with disconnecting front brake tube No.5 through Special Service Tool: 09023-00101, sliding the clip away from the vacuum hose and finishing the operation by disconnecting 2 or 3 brake tubes from the clamp and removing the 4 nuts and push rod clevis before pulling out the brake booster assembly. Extract the brake booster gasket together with the check valve assembly which incorporates a grommet from within the brake booster assembly. First place the check valve assembly together with grommet then install the new brake booster gasket. Compulsory installation of the brake booster push rod clevis needs adjustment of the brake pedal height followed by lock nut torque rotation. Reassemble the brake booster assembly using 4 nuts which should be tightened to 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) before connecting 2 or 3 brake tubes to the clamp and attaching the vacuum hose. The installation requires using Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to connect the front brake tube No.5 while reaching a torque of 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) and verifying proper grommet positioning. Follow up the front wheel LH installation by torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Then mount the cruise control actuator assembly with bracket through 2 nuts and bolt at 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Begin by attaching the brake master cylinder push rod clevis to the assembly before adding the brake master cylinder sub-unit then the air cleaner case sub-unit with 3 bolts to which the air cleaner element installs next. The completion of this procedure requires installation of the air cleaner cap sub-assembly followed by brake fluid reservoir filling and master cylinder bleeding using Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 and brake line bleeding before checking brake pedal height and free play and reserve distance and fluid levels and inspecting the brake booster assembly and checking for fluid leakage.
