Scion A/C Clutch switches on and off quickly, maintains cabin coolness without straining the engine. In 2003, Scion entered the streets on boulevards in search of first-time buyers with virtual city, club beats, and ad-heavy graphics that were easy to stick like stickers. Scion abandoned haggling, gave individual trims, poured in splendid paint, and allowed shoppers to sign once and make an exit. Scion packaged every Release Series with numbered badges, exclusive apparel, and limited quantities that transformed the parking-lot meetup into sneaker launches. Scion closed down in 2016 having delivered more than 1,000,000 cars, although its rebel playbook continues to inform the way drivers customize rides in the present day. The short production runs created lines and the hype brought interested friends into the showrooms, which were usually closed off to young purses. A/C Clutch operates such that the compressor is locked when the dash knob requires chill, directing engine torque via a magnetized hub, and dropping out when cooling load ceases, cuts drag when in urban idles, and accelerates when on the highway. The A/C Clutch is designed with very low tolerances to allow the belts to slide or roll off the rails without making noise or causing the pulleys to spin. Since the A/C Clutch is disengaged at cruise, the motor works less hard, the cabin temperatures are maintained, and the fuel consumption is lean. Track-day drivers appreciate that the A/C Clutch makes loading the car as trim as possible without having to sweat off during the cool-down laps.

Scion A/C Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the A/C Clutch on Scion tC?
    A:
Begin compressor clutch replacement by removing refrigerant from the refrigeration system and cutting off the negative battery terminal cable which requires 90 seconds of waiting time before starting the task. You need to disconnect the No. 1 cooler refrigerant suction hose by unbolting the fastener while taking out the O-ring before applying vinyl tape at both openings to stop moisture and foreign material infiltration. Move on to the procedure of separating the No. 1 cooler refrigerant discharge hose in a similar process. The procedure starts with engine under cover removal along with fan and generator V belt before the cooler compressor assembly can be disconnected and its four bolts removed. The installation process requires fitting the four bolts on the cooler compressor assembly at a torque of 25 N.m (255 kgf.cm, 18 ft.lbf) and connecting the connector. The No. 1 cooler refrigerant discharge hose installation requires vinyl tape removal followed by adding compressor oil (ND-OIL 8 or equivalent) to a new O-ring and the fitting surface then adding the O-ring and screwing the hose in place using a bolt torqued to 9.8 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf). Rephrase the same procedure for installing the No. 1 cooler refrigerant suction hose. Reinstall the engine under cover RH before reestablishing the cable connection to the negative battery terminal and the fan along with generator V belt. Initialization steps must be done because selected vehicle systems need system initialization following battery connector removal. The technician should charge the refrigerant system after engine warm-up while checking for any refrigerant leakages.
