2009 Toyota Highlander Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove the front shock absorber on 2009 Toyota Highlander?
A: The first step to extract the front shock absorber involves removing the front wheel. The first step requires separation of the ejector tube (applicable to 1AR-FE models) before proceeding to remove front wiper arm assemblies from both left-hand and right-hand sides. Front support to front shock absorber nut requires loosening for front shock absorber with coil spring disassembly but complete removal is unnecessary except during that procedure. Start by removing the cowl top ventilator louver sub-assembly and proceed with removal of the windshield wiper motor and link. Begin by leaving the 4 clamps before disjoining the wiper wire harness and continuing with removal of 8 bolts with 6 nuts. Disassemble the front speed sensor after removing its bolt and clamp while the front stabilizer link assembly should be separated from the front shock absorber by using a hexagon wrench (6 mm) to prevent ball joint movement when removing the nut. A jack along with a wooden block should be used to support the front axle afterward use 2 bolts and 2 nuts to disconnect the front shock absorber with coil spring from the steering knuckle yet keep the bolts from rotating when removing the nuts. Use a screwdriver to remove the nut and two spacers which are located on the upper section of the front shock absorber with coil spring so the front speed sensor becomes fully separated. Secure the front shock absorber with coil spring to a vise by using aluminum plates clamped onto a double nutted bolt installed on the absorber bracket at its bottom position. Compression through Special Service Tools 09727-30021, 09727-00010, and 09727-00050 enables front coil spring compression that needs not use an impact wrench to safeguard tool maintenance. The front coil spring needs to be compressed to its maximum length before you remove the front support to front shock absorber nut. The next step requires complete removal of the front suspension support sub-assembly, front suspension support bearing, front coil spring upper seat, front coil spring upper insulator and front coil spring followed by front spring bumper and front coil spring lower insulator.
