2009 Toyota Highlander Ball Joint Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to install the front lower ball joint and related components on 2009 Toyota Highlander?
A: Tighten the front lower ball joint nut to 123 Nm (1254 kgf-cm, 91 ft-lbf) torque but apply anti-oil solution to the screw and tapered parts before installing a new cotter pin and increasing the nut torque up to 60 degrees when the holes for the cotter pin are uneven. The front shock absorber receives the front axle assembly through the installation of two bolts together with two nuts. You should apply engine oil to the threaded areas of the nuts before torquing them up to 290 Nm (2956 kgf-cm, 213 ft-lbf). First install the front drive shaft assembly to the front axle hub sub-assembly based on matchmarks and add the front lower suspension arm to the front lower ball joint using a bolt and 2 nuts which must be torqued to 92 Nm (938 kgf-cm, 68 ft-lbf). The tie rod assembly needs assembly before installing the front disc brake caliper assembly onto the steering knuckle through 2 bolts while torquing them to 104 Nm (1060 kgf-cm, 77 ft-lbf). Once fitted with the clamp and sensor use an 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 in-lbf) bolt torque while making sure foreign matter stays off the tip and pushing the sensor body deep into the knuckle before tightening the bolt as well as verifying clear space between the sensor stay and knuckle and avoiding contact with the magnetic rotor. Both 2GR-FE and 1AR-FE engines require installation of their front axle hub nut before testing the ABS speed sensor signal and tightening the front wheel to 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf). The final step includes checking the front wheel alignment.
