2008 Toyota Highlander Ball Joint Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to install the front lower ball joint and related components on 2008 Toyota Highlander?
A: The front lower ball joint installation process requires attachment to the steering knuckle through nut threading with 123 Nm torque (1254 kgf-cm, 91 ft-lbf) and strict protection from oil contact against screw and tapered components. A new cotter pin installation should be followed by an additional 60-degree torque on the nut when front suspension holes differ in positioning. Alternatively, add engine oil to the used nuts before installation when retaining them for reuse. After fitting the front axle assembly to the front shock absorber with two bolts and two nuts, fully tighten all connections with a torque of 290 Nm (2956 kgf-cm, 213 ft-lbf). The front drive shaft assembly must be placed along matchmarks on the front axle hub sub-assembly. To connect the front lower suspension arm to the front lower ball joint use a bolt accompanied by two nuts that should be tightened to 92 Nm (938 kgf-cm, 68 ft-lbf). Screw in the 2 bolts of the front disc brake caliper assembly to the steering knuckle while tightening them to 104 Nm (1060 kgf-cm, 77 ft-lbf). Place a bolt through the clamp and sensor unit while torquing it to 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 in-lbf) to maintain a sensor fit without clearance between the device stay and knuckle. Also ensure there is no foreign matter caught on the sensor tip. Do not turn the sensor body during its installation process. Complete the procedure by installing the front axle hub nut then check the ABS speed sensor signal before you torque the front wheel to 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf) for a front wheel alignment inspection.
