2006 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear Wheel Hub and Wheel Bearing on 2006 Toyota Highlander?
A: The initial step for rear wheel hub and bearing servicing involves using a dial indicator to check for hub looseness at its center point with a measurement surface set at right angles while maximum acceptable looseness stands at 0 mm (0 inch) with an extreme value requiring a wheel hub assembly replacement. The measurement of external hub bolt surface runout must not exceed 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch); when this limit is surpassed the wheel hub assembly needs replacement. Remove the front wheel before starting to disassemble the right-hand side rear disc brake caliper assembly by disconnecting its flexible hose and securing bolt followed by the two brake caliper securing bolts and maintaining the caliper securely. After disc removal disconnect the skid control sensor wire. Next detach the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly through removal of the four bolts from the left-hand side. First install the left-hand side rear wheel hub by connecting it with four bolts which demand torque specification at 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). The skid control sensor wire restarts first before you inspect bearing backlash and axial hub deviation to proceed with rear disc installation. Put the two bolts into position around the right-hand side rear disk brake caliper assembly and torque them to 78 Nm (800 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.). Secure the flexible hose with the bolt torqued to 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). To finish the installation you should torque the rear wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) before inspecting wheel alignment and checking the ABS speed sensor signal.
