- Q: How to service and repair the parking brake cable on 2006 Toyota Highlander?A: You must start the parking brake cable service and repair by removing the rear wheel followed by separating the disc brake caliper assembly LH through the removal of its two bolts without touching the flexible hose. The service begins by removing the rear disc before proceeding with removal of the parking brake shoe return tension spring then parking brake shoe strut set LH and finally removing both parking brake shoe assemblies LH No. 1 and No. 2. During 4WD model maintenance technicians should eliminate the speed sensor rear LH and rear axle shaft LH nut and rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH. Remove parking brake cable assembly No. 3 by first detaching it from the backing plate with 2 bolts before disassembling the body parts with 4 nuts and 2 bolts to disconnect it from the equalizer and the support bracket No. 1. First install the parking brake cable support bracket No. 1 onto parking brake cable assembly No. 3 followed by marrying it to the equalizer with numeric verification of the No. 1 cable boot stopper entering the T-Metal fitting groove before final engineered application of the 4 nuts and 2 bolts secured with Bolt A to 8.5 Nm tension and Bolt B to 39 Nm tension and Nut to 6.0 Nm tension. Connect the two bolts of parking brake cable assembly No. 3 to the backing plate while applying 8.0 Nm of torque. Before installing the rear axle hub and bearing assembly on the left-hand side alongside the rear axle shaft 4WD nut the technician applies grease then completes the speed sensor rear installation on the left hand side. The brake shoe assembly LH No. 2 receives installation followed by the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set LH, then parking brake shoe assembly LH No. 1, parking brake shoe strut set LH and the parking brake shoe return tension spring. The parking brake installation must be checked before inspecting 4WD bearing backlash and axle hub deviation. Install the rear disc while aligning matchmarks. Position the parking brake shoes to their desired clearance before installing the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH with 2 bolts that require 78 Nm torque then fitting the rear wheel that requires 103 Nm torque. The procedure concludes with inspections of parking brake pedal travel and testing the ABS speed sensor signal specific to 4WD.
