- Q: How to service and repair the parking brake cable on 2007 Toyota Highlander?A: The service and repair process of the parking brake cable starts by removing the rear wheel followed by separating the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH by taking out its 2 bolts which do not affect the flexible hose. Service begins with rear disc removal then continuing with removal of the parking brake shoe return tension spring, parking brake shoe strut set LH, parking brake shoe assembly LH No.1, parking brake shoe adjusting screw set LH and parking brake shoe assembly LH No.2. During 4WD model service the technician needs to remove the speed sensor rear LH along with the rear axle shaft LH nut and rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH. The parking brake cable assembly No.3 requires removal by first losing connection to the backing plate through 2 bolts prior to detaching it from the body through 4 nuts and 2 bolts to obtain access to disconnect from the equalizer while also uninstalling the parking brake cable support bracket No.1. To install the parking brake cable system the parking brake cable support bracket No.1 should first be attached to parking brake cable assembly No.3 while fitting it onto the equalizer until the No.1 cable boot stopper rests within the T-Metal grooves. Secure the system to the body using 4 nuts and 2 bolts applying a specific torque sequence: Bolt A at 8.5 Nm, Bolt B at 39 Nm, and Nut at 6.0 Nm. Attach parking brake cable assembly No.3 to the backing plate through two bolts tightened to 8.0 Nm. The technician should first apply high-temperature grease before installing the rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH with rear axle shaft LH nut for 4WD and then the speed sensor rear LH. The order for assembly is parking brake shoe assembly LH No.2 followed by parking brake shoe adjusting screw set LH then parking brake shoe assembly LH No.1 and finally parking brake shoe strut set LH and parking brake shoe return tension spring. After parking brake installation complete inspect bearing backlash and check axle hub deviation of 4WD systems before aligning the matchmarks of the rear disc. The rear disc brake caliper assembly LH must be connected through 2 bolts which require a torque of 78 Nm, followed by installing the rear wheel at 103 Nm before performing inspection and adjustments on the parking brake pedal and verifying the ABS speed sensor signal for 4WD.
