2005 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear wheel bearing on 2005 Toyota Highlander?
A: Start with removing the rear wheel before beginning the replacement of the rear wheel bearing. Start by taking apart the rear disc brake caliper assembly on the left-hand side through bolt removal of the flexible hose followed by two bolts used to hold the brake caliper then use a support to keep the caliper in place. The speed sensor wire needs its connector unplugged before removing the rear disc part. Begin to uninstall the left-hand side rear axle hub assembly through the removal of four bolts. Install the new axle hub by using its four bolts then tighten them up to 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). The speed sensor wire requires connection by inserting its connector back into place. Check backlash of the bearing using a dial indicator at the axle hub center point where the maximum allowable amount is 0.0 mm (0.0 inch) but any higher amount indicates that the axle hub assembly needs replacement. At the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt the deviation measurement should be checked with a dial indicator for a maximum allowable limit of 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) and the axle hub assembly needs to be replaced if this limit is exceeded. Start by attaching the back disc followed by the rear disc brake caliper assembly to the left-hand side using the two bolts tightened up to 78 Nm (800 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.). Reattach the flexible hose through its bolt with a torque of 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). The last step includes reinstalling the rear wheel while torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) followed by examinations of rear wheel alignment and ABS speed sensor signal checks.
