2004 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear wheel bearing on 2004 Toyota Highlander?
A: The procedure starts with removing the rear wheel as the first step for bearing replacement. The left-hand rear disc brake caliper assembly separation starts by unscrewing the bolt that detaches the flexible hose before you remove the two brake caliper bolts and securely mount the caliper. You should disconnect the speed sensor wire by removing its connector after removing the rear disc. The next step is to remove the rear axle hub assembly from the left-hand side through removal of its four bolts. You should install the new axle hub by attaching it with four bolts while tightening them to 80 Nm torque (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). Complete the speed sensor wire connection through the reattachment of the electrical connector. Set a dial indicator near the central point of the axle hub to measure backlash until reaching the maximum allowed value of 0.0 mm (0.0 inch). The axle hub assembly requires replacement if any existing backlash measurement exceeds this standard. An axle hub assembly needs replacement if the maximum deviation of 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) is exceeded when measuring with a dial indicator at the surface of the hub outside its bolt position. Reinstall the rear disc and the rear disc brake caliper assembly to the left-hand side using two bolts that require 78 Nm (800 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.) torque and a flexible hose bolt that needs 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) torque for installation. A proper torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) should be applied to the rear wheel and after that check the alignment of the wheel and verify the ABS speed sensor signal.
