2003 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear wheel bearing on 2003 Toyota Highlander?
A: Begin the rear wheel bearing replacement task by uninstalling the rear wheel. Start by detaching the flexible hose with its bolt on the left-hand side rear disc brake caliper assembly. After removing the two securing bolts you can support the caliper and detach it. Start by disconnecting the speed sensor wire through removing the connector and later discarding the back disc. After detaching the four bolts you can remove the left-hand side rear axle hub assembly. The installation requires you to join the new axle hub to its four bolts while applying 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft lbs) tension for proper assembly. Reconnect the speed sensor wire through the reattachment of its connector. Check the bearing backlash by placing a dial indicator at the center of the axle hub and verify it stays within a 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) limit; otherwise, replace the axle hub assembly. A dial indicator should be used to check the axle hub deviation at the surface outside the bolts; any reading above 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) requires immediate axle hub assembly replacement. After installing the rear disc, attach the rear disc brake caliper assembly to the left-hand side through the two bolts which require tightening to 61.8 Nm (630 kgf-cm, 46 ft. lbs.) while applying 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) torque when fixing the flexible hose. Reinstall the rear wheel by tightening it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) and perform checks on rear wheel alignment followed by testing the ABS speed sensor signal.
