2003 Toyota Highlander Speed Sensor Parts Q&A
Q: How to replace a Speed Sensor on 2003 Toyota Highlander?
A: The replacement process for the skid control sensor begins by removing the rear wheel and disconnecting the connector from its sensor. The skid control sensor replacement process starts by taking off the LH rear disc brake caliper assembly followed by the removal of the rear disc. Secure the 4 bolts from the rear axle hub & bearing assembly RH to remove it. Mount the rear axle hub inside a soft jaw vise while the assembly needs replacement if the hub experiences sudden strong impacts or drops. Use a pin punch and hammer together with Special Service Tool to drive out pins from both attachments which will allow the removal of the tools from their special attachment point. Movement of the skid control sensor from the rear axle hub requires Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040), 09521-00020, 09950-00020 and 2 bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, pitch: 1.5 mm) by following precise steps to protect the sensor rotor while preventing surface damage of the axle hub and speed sensor. Clear both the new skid control sensor and the axle hub's contact surface from all foreign substance that could remain on the sensor rotor. A proper orientation of the skid control sensor connector should be maintained before pressing it onto the axle hub using Special Service Tool. Use the press tool to mount the sensor without hitting it directly with a hammer. Position the skid control sensor so it enters directly and proceed with slow insertion. Under post-installation procedures use 4 bolts to fasten the rear axle hub & bearing assembly RH while tightening them to 56 Nm (571 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.). The installation sequence continues with the rear disc followed by the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH then the skid control sensor wire. Finish by installing the rear wheel and torquing it to 103 Nm then check the wheel alignment before verifying the ABS speed sensor signal.
