2004 Toyota Highlander Speed Sensor Parts Q&A
Q: How to replace a Speed Sensor on 2004 Toyota Highlander?
A: The first step to replace the skid control sensor begins by removing the rear wheel before disconnecting its wire through connector removal. First detach the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH then remove the rear disc through the process of marking the rear disc and axle hub before disassembly. After the rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH removal you must set it on a soft jaw vise with caution against dropping or subjecting it to powerful impacts that require a replacement. Drive out the 2 pins from Special Service Tool(s) using a pin punch combined with a hammer to unfasten the items mounted on the tools. Special Service Tools 09520-00031 (09520-00040), 09521-00020, 09950-00020(s) should be employed with the addition of 2 bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, pitch: 1.5 mm) for extracting the skid control sensor from the hub & bearing assembly. This operation must be conducted without damaging the contacting surfaces. Before installation clean both sides that contact the hub and sensor and position the skid control sensor with the connector at the lowest part when it is installed. Use tool 09214-76011(s) with a press to mount the skid control sensor onto the hub & bearing assembly where direct hammer use is prohibited and a smooth slow insertion of the sensor detection area should be made. Follow the repair by reinstalling the rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH and check bearing backlash and actualize axle hub deviation before aligning matchmarks when replacing the rear disc through selection of the setup with minimum runout (new disc). Perceive the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH in place then connect the skid control sensor wire and conclude installation by tightening the rear wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Warning lights should be checked and then an inspection follows for wheel alignment adjustment of the rear wheel and ABS speed sensor signal verification.
