2005 Toyota Highlander Speed Sensor Parts Q&A
Q: How to replace a Speed Sensor on 2005 Toyota Highlander?
A: The skid control sensor replacement process starts by removing the rear wheel while detaching the skid control sensor wire connector. Before disc removal the mechanic must separate the rear disc brake caliper assembly on the left-hand side followed by placing matchmarks between the rear disc and axle hub before disassembly. After installing the left-hand side rear axle hub & bearing assembly onto a soft jaw vise replace it immediately in case of any potential shock or drop. Drive out the two pins of Special Service Tool(s) using a pin punch and hammer while removing the two attached tools. Detecting serious damage to the contacting surfaces during skid control sensor removal from the hub & bearing assembly requires Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040), 09521-00020, 09950-00020(s) equipped with two bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, pitch: 1.5 mm). Failure of the sensor rotor requires installing a new hub & bearing assembly. Installation starts with cleaning both the sensor-contacting areas of the hub along with the new skid control sensor. Position the sensor to face its connector downwards after the sensor fits onto the vehicle. You must install the skid control sensor onto the hub & bearing assembly by using Special Service Tool: 09214-76011(s) along with a press tool to ensure the sensor detection part remains clean and the operation moves in a straight direction at a slow pace. A backlash check and a measurement of hub deviation must occur after the left-hand side rear axle hub & bearing assembly installation. The rear installation process involves matching reference points followed by selecting the spot with minimum runout for new disc applications. The caliper assembly should then be mounted on the left-rear position. Continue the skid control sensor wire and attach the rear wheel with a torque force of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The last steps include measuring the alignment of the rear wheel and verifying the function of the ABS speed sensor.
