2001 Toyota Highlander Wheel Bearing Parts Q&A
Q: How to replace the rear wheel bearing on 2001 Toyota Highlander?
A: The replacement of the rear wheel bearing begins with disc caliper brake assembly detachment including a bolt removal to separate the flexible hose and subsequent removal of two brake caliper retaining bolts. The first task requires disconnecting the flexible hose by unbolting the bolt and removing both brake caliper bolts on the left side wheel while maintaining proper support of the brake caliper assembly. Reduce the rear disc [42431 / 98-63] and separate the skid control sensor wire [89516 / 98-170] by disconnecting the connector. You must remove the left side rear axle hub and bearing assembly [42450B / 98-63] by extracting its four bolts and subsequent removal of the axle hub. First remove the existing skid control sensor [89544 / 98-170] before adding a new sensor of the same model [89544 / 98-170]. Secure the left side rear axle hub and bearing assembly [42450B / 98-63] with four bolts which should be torqued to 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). Resume the skid control sensor wire operation by attaching its connector [89516 / 98-170]. The bearing backlash inspection requires a dial indicator near the center of the axle hub which must not exceed 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) maximum; when the value surpasses this threshold a new axle hub assembly must be installed. A dial indicator should check the axle hub deviation at the surface outside the hub bolt, and replacement of the axle hub assembly is necessary when the measurement exceeds 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). Place the rear disc [42431 / 98-63] before setting the rear disc brake caliper assembly to the left side and tighten both bolts to 61.8 Nm (630 kgf-cm, 46 ft. lbs.) before securing the flexible hose with a bolt torqued to 29.4Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.). After reinstalling the rear wheel users should torque it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Then they should perform wheel alignment checks followed by ABS speed sensor signal assessment.
