2001 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Front Wheel Speed Sensor on 2001 Toyota Highlander?
A: The Front Wheel Speed Sensor requires replacement by uninstalling the front wheel together with the front fender liner LH [53876A/98-97]. First disconnect the speed sensor connector then remove two clamp bolts which hold the sensor harness and clamp against the body and shock absorber. Disconnect the speed sensor FR LH [89543/98-170] while removing its bolt so foreign contaminants stay away from the sensor tip. Fasten the new speed sensor FR LH [89543/98-170] along with its bolt at 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) then verify the sensor tip remains free of debris. Secure sensor harness clamps using bolt "A" with a torque setting of 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.) and bolt "B" with a torque of 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). Install the clamp to its place on the knuckle while connecting the speed sensor connector. The front fender liner LH [53876A/98-97] and the front wheel should be reinstalled with a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Test the ABS speed sensor signal as your last step.
