In order to access the lower ball joint, disconnect the tie rod end and remove the front wheel. Unscrew the cotter pin and nut and disassemble the bottom ball joint. Check its rotation, install nut and check torque. Install back together and check front wheel alignment.

How to service and repair the upper ball joint on Toyota 4Runner?

To service the upper ball joint, take the steering knuckle off and then snap the ball joint out with a snap ring expender and Special Service Tool. Test the rotation of the joint, then place a new ball joint in using a suitable set of tools attaching it with a snap ring and boot, and after that, the steering knuckle can be reinstalled.
