2001 Toyota 4Runner Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the upper ball joint on 2001 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Service and repair of the upper ball joint starts by deflating the tire and taking off the steering knuckle and axle hub before the upper ball joint removal process which includes detaching the wire and boot followed by using a snap ring expander tool and Special Service Tool: 09950-40011 (09951-04010, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04031, 09957-04010, 09958-04011) with a deep socket wrench for extracting the upper ball joint. Before attaching the nut inspect the ball joint rotation condition by moving the ball joint stud five times in both directions followed by a torque wrench application with a continuous one turn per 2-4 seconds and register the torque result at the fifth rotation within the range of 0.7 - 4.4 Nm (7 - 45 kgf-cm, 6 - 39 inch lbs.). Install the new ball joint using Special Service Tool: 09309-37010 with a socket wrench and press before setting a new snap ring through a snap ring expander and completing the installation by securing a new boot with a new wire using the provided grease until the steering knuckle with axle hub is ready for reinstallation.
