2001 Toyota 4Runner Ball Joint Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the lower ball joint on 2001 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The first step for lower ball joint servicing includes wheel removal with 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.) torsion followed by disconnecting the tie rod end. After loosening the 4 bolts to 80 Nm tension (820 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) without bolt removal proceed to remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end and separate the nut with a torque of 91 Nm (930 kgf-cm, 67 ft. lbs.) while using Special Service Tool: 09610-20012 to disconnect the rod end from the steering knuckle. To remove the lower ball joint first take off the nut as well as the cotter pin at 142 Nm (1,450 kgf-cm, 105 ft. lbs.) then use Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to extract it from the lower suspension arm with the cotter pin hole facing forward for reinstallation. Lose the 4 bolts followed by removing the lower ball joint through suspension arm and steering knuckle lift. Afterward securely attach support to the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle. Before fastening the ball joint nut, first inspect its rotation by performing five rotations of the ball joint stud. Then operate a torque wrench to turn the nut one continuous turn during 2-4 seconds of time. The torque measurement on the fifth turn should range between 0.1 - 2.5 Nm (1 - 25 kgf-cm, 0.8 - 21.7 inch lbs.). The front wheel alignment needs inspection following installation. Installation happens in the opposite order of removal.
