- Q: How to service and repair the rear Sway Bar Kit on 2001 Toyota 4Runner?A: The first step to service and repair the rear sway bar kit includes jacking up and properly supporting the vehicle. The sway bar kit requires removal of links after unsticking the bar from its connection while torquing the nuts down to 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). A hexagon wrench should be used on the stud when the ball joint stud rotates with the nut. You should use a wrench to grasp the sway bar link followed by removing 2 nuts and 2 retainers and 2 cushions and 2 links after applying 20 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) torque. Unscrew the 4 retainers then 2 cushions which are present on the sway bar links. The removal of the rear axle sway bar kit requires the dismantling of 4 bolts along with sway bar kit and bushings and brackets which should be torqued to 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 Ft-lbs). The bushing should be positioned outside the paint line of the sway bar kit before setting it in place along with the cutout facing downward from the vehicle. The sway bar link needs an inspection through ball joint stud rotations in all directions; when damper movement is not smooth or free the sway bar link requires replacement. Installation procedure begins by doing the opposite of what was performed during removal.
