2002 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the lower ball joint on 2002 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Initiating lower ball joint repair operations should begin by unfastening the front wheel with a torque of 110 Nm that equals 1,150 kgf-cm or 83 ft. lbs. The first step is to loosen the 4 bolts of the tie rod end to 80 Nm (820 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) stop then discard the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod end with a torque of 91 Nm (930 kgf-cm, 67 ft. lbs.) using Special Service Tool: 09610-20012 for tie rod end disconnect from the steering knuckle. Secure Special Service Tool 09628-62011 to remove the lower ball joint from your lower suspension arm after you have removed its nut with a torque of 142 Nm (1,450 kgf-cm, 105 ft. lbs.) along with its cotter pin. Position the cotter pin hole facing forward during installation. The 4 bolts need removal and you should disconnect the lower ball joint while securely supporting the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle. The ball joint rotation check requires flipping the stud five times before adding the nut while a torque wrench should be used to turn the nut one full revolution every 2 to 4 seconds and measure the torque on the fifth rotation to achieve a target of 0.1 to 2.5 Nm (1 to 25 kgf-cm, 0.8 to 21.7 inch lbs.). Check the front wheel alignment after installation while performing the backward sequence of removal steps.
