2002 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you remove and install a coil spring on 2002 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The coil spring removal begins with axing up the rear axle housing and supporting the frame with stands before securing the rear axle housing with jack support. Detach the wheel after tightening it to 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). The parking brake cable bracket needs to be detached from the rear axle housing using 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm or 9 ft. lbs.) torque. The procedure to remove the rear shock absorber starts by using 64 Nm (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.) torque to remove the bolt alongside 2 washers and 2 bushings then turning the shock absorber while holding the nut results in the removal of 3 retainers, 2 cushions and shock absorber at a torque of 20 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Discard the stabilizer bar brackets from the frame structure and separate the lateral control rod from its position. Proceed with a methodical rear axle housing lowering that prevents brake line trauma and remove the coil spring. When installing the coil spring end must be positioned correctly or reinstall it. To examine the shock absorber operation first press it while inspecting for uniform movement without any abnormal resistance or noises during the stroke. The speed of return for gas-filled shock absorbers should be constant during a full compression cycle; this speed information usually appears engraved on the shell. Before discarding a gas-filled shock absorber drill a 2 - 3 mm (0.079 - 0.118 inch) hole at the specified spot to release the gas while keeping in mind that the gas is without color or smell and poses no toxicity risks yet chips may spread during drilling. The installation process requires steps which reverse the sequence used for removal.
