2003 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you overhaul the front shock absorber and coil spring on 2003 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Front disc wheel removal should be the first step followed by front stabilizer link assembly separation on both left and right sides by disconnecting links from steering knuckle with possible assistance from a hexagon (6 mm) wrench. Remove the stabilizer brackets together with the stabilizer bar from the front section. Models without rear air suspension (W/O REAS) require front shock absorber with coil spring removal through the process of separating the bolt, nut along with washer and three upper nuts. Models equipped with rear air suspension (W/ REAS) need shock absorbers to be fully extended prior to loosening the nut and disconnecting the tube followed by bolt and nut removal. The front shock absorber cushion retainer and cushion with suspension support sub-assembly removal requires Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00031), 09727-00060 to compress the coil spring. The front coil spring and absorber bush can be removed using Special Service Tool: 09710-22021 (09710-01071, 09710-01081) in combination with a press device. The shock absorber assembly should undergo inspection for any irregularities before a replacement is performed. Insert the spring lower seat onto the front coil spring before installing a new absorber bush. After installation of new parts the process ends with tightening the shock absorber lock nut to 25 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 18 ft-lbs). Tighten the front shock absorber with coil spring in a temporary manner by orienting the lower end toward the rear of the vehicle before torquing top nuts to 64 Nm (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.). Mount the stabilizer bar along with its brackets before linking stabilizer assemblies which must receive 70 Nm (710 kgf-cm/52 ft. lbs.) torque. Reinstall the front disc wheel before torquing it to 112 Nm (1,140 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.), stabilize the suspension by bouncing the vehicle, then fully tighten the front shock absorber with coil spring to 135 Nm (1,380 kgf-cm, 100 ft. lbs.). Before closing the procedure you must conduct a final inspection of the front wheel alignment. The front shock absorber assembly disposal requires complete piston rod extension before vise-mounting and drilling a 5 cm hole at the top section while protecting the drill from generating debris. Only loosen the nut at a controlled pace when discarding the unit to empty its oil and reduce pressure inside the absorber yet never free the eye union nut when the vehicle does not require maintenance.
