2003 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to overhaul the front Sway Bar Kit on 2003 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The first step to front sway bar kit overhaul includes taking off the front wheels from the vehicle. First detach the front sway bar link assembly LH through the removal of the 2 nuts followed by hexagon (6 mm) wrench use to stop the ball joint stud from turning. The removal of the right-hand side front sway bar link assembly follows the same disassembly steps. The ball joint dust cover requires inspection by performing 5 alternating movements of the stud before installing the nut followed by a torque wrench application with 2 - 4 second continuous turns to measure 2.0 Nm (20 kgf-cm, 18 inch lbs.) or less torque on the 5th turn. Detect any damage on the ball joint dust cover during this process. Disassemble the front sway bar bracket No.2 LH by removing its two bolts and afterwards separate the front sway bar bracket No.1 RH through this same procedure. Begin by unfastening the 2 bushings of front sway bar bush No.1 followed by removal of the sway bar kit front itself. To install begin with sway bar kit front before positioning the 2 front sway bar bush No.1 so their bushing sits inside the sway bar kit stopper with protrusions toward the inner vehicle side. Secure the front sway bar bracket No.2 LH using two bolts which need tightening up to 40 Nm (410 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.) before proceeding to install the front sway bar bracket No.1 RH with same torque specifications. Install the front sway bar link assembly LH by tightening the 2 nuts to 70 Nm (710 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.) yet keep the ball joint steady through the use of a hexagon (6 mm) wrench on the stud. Finally put on the front sway bar link assembly RH by repeating the previous steps then reinstall the front wheels with torque of 112 Nm (1,140 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.).
