2003 Toyota 4Runner Shock Absorber Parts Q&A
Q: How to replace the Shock Absorber Assembly Rear LH (W/ REAS) on 2003 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The procedure for Shock Absorber Assembly Rear LH (W/ REAS) replacement starts with draining the rear wheel and disassembling the rear stabilizer link assembly. Disconnection of the shock absorber assembly begins by removing its bolt and bracket then securing this bracket with a wrench to detach the joint. Users should extend all shock absorbers to their regular suspension point before removing the bolt connecting the rear axle housing to the shock absorber assembly while supporting the rear axle to prevent it from extending past its normal suspension position. Fully extend the shock absorber rod while holding the body part to remove the nut, cushion retainer along with cushion No. 1 and the shock absorber assembly. After that remove the lower bracket which is a part of the shock absorber assembly. Begin installation by attaching the lower bracket to the shock absorber assembly followed by installing the cushion retainer then cushion No. 1 and finally tightening the assembly with the nut to 40 Nm (408 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.). Make sure the positioning protrusion enters the bracket hole of the frame and the hose faces the front position. After installing the shock absorber assembly bolt alongside the bracket bolt with proper torque to 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.), users should maintain the bracket position by using a spanner tool. They should tighten the joint until it reaches a 1 mm (0.04 inch) gap spacing while applying a reference torque of 25 Nm (255 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.). To complete the installation place in the rear stabilizer link assembly then the rear wheel by torquing to 112 Nm at (1,137 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Fully tighten the shock absorber assembly rear LH bolt to 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.) after stabilizing the suspension through repeated bouncing while jacking down the vehicle and inspect the unit for any fluid leakage. To dispose of the absorber oil you need to release the bolt then drain out its contents.
