2008 Toyota Highlander Engine Control Module Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2008 Toyota Highlander?
A: One must disconnect the negative battery terminal cable then wait a minimum of 90 seconds before ECM replacement of the 2GR-FE engine control system. All wheel transmitter IDs should be noted before eliminating the tire pressure warning ECU because they will need re-registration. The removal process starts by taking off the front door scuff plate RH followed by the cowl side trim sub-assembly RH. The sequence must be repeated when removing the components from the LH side. The technician should now detach the No. 2 instrument panel under cover sub-assembly along with the lower instrument panel sub-assembly. A vehicle with Smart Key system requires users to remove both the certification ECU (Smart Key ECU assembly) and the tire pressure warning ECU. After detaching the wire harness connector you must disconnect the 5 ECM connectors before removing the wire harness clamp to eventually extract the 2 nuts and bolt and the ECM. The process ends with taking out the 2 screws from the No. 1 ECM bracket before continuing with the removal of the No. 2 ECM bracket through identical steps.
