Q: How to Properly Install the Camshaft Timing Gear, Timing Chain, Camshafts, and Related Components to Ensure Correct Timing and Assembly on 2008 Toyota Camry?
A: After aligning the straight pin and key groove misalignment of camshaft timing gear assembly with the camshaft, turn the camshaft timing gear as you gently push it against the camshaft to align the pin into the groove while avoiding the retard angle side. First ensure there is no space between the gear and camshaft. Subsequently tighten the flange bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft-lbf) to check the camshaft timing gear can reach its most retarded position. To install the camshaft you should apply engine oil to the journal part and install the timing chain on the camshaft timing gear with proper paint mark alignment to the timing mark and perform front mark number verification before inserting bearing caps into the cylinder head. Place engine oil on the threads together with under the heads of the bearing cap bolts before following the sequential bolt tightening procedure starting at No. 1 Bearing cap to 30 Nm (301 kgf-cm, 22 ft-lbf) followed by No. 3 Bearing cap at 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 in-lbf). The procedure for installing the number 2 camshaft involves journal portion oiling followed by alignment of the paint mark to the timing mark on the cylinder head. Afterwards temporarily fasten the camshaft timing sprocket set bolt before performing front mark number verification. End with an installation of the bearing caps. Follow the instructions by adding oil to the threads and under the heads of bearing cap bolts. Use even torque on all cap bolts by doing No. 2 Bearing cap at 30 Nm (301 kgf-cm, 22 ft-lbf) and No. 3 Bearing cap at 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 in-lbf) while holding the camshaft with a wrench before tightening the camshaft timing sprocket set bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft-lbf). Check that paint marks on the chain match the timing marks on both the camshaft timing gear and camshaft timing sprocket after verifying the crankshaft pulley groove is correctly aligned with the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover. After installing the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly, measure valve clearance, install the cylinder head cover sub-assembly, attach the ignition coil assembly, put in the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly, install the front fender apron seal RH, place the engine under cover LH, fit the engine under cover RH and finally install the front wheel RH before verifying engine oil leak points.
