2007 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you service and repair the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2007 Toyota Camry?
A: The first step to work on the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring is disconnecting the negative battery cable followed by a 90-second wait to avoid Air Bag deployment. Following straight-ahead wheel alignment you must take off the No. 3 lower steering wheel cover together with the No. 2 lower steering wheel cover and steering pad and steering wheel assembly and steering column cover. Model owners without VSC systems should disconnect clock spring connectors with proper care of the Air Bag wire harness before disengaging 3 claws to remove the clock spring. The clock spring with VSC requires disconnecting its connectors before removing it by disengaging its 3 claws. Separate the 6 claws on the clock spring before removing it from the steering angle sensor when necessary. To install the clock spring toward the steering angle sensor use the 6 claws and position both front wheels straight and the turn signal at neutral motion to prevent pin damage. When hooking up the clock spring and steering angle sensor connectors maintain special attention to the Air Bag connector. Models without VSC will require this installation sequence to be performed with straight front wheels and neutral turn signal position before using the 3 claws and connectors. Begin by disabling the ignition switch and disconnecting the battery negative cable while installing the steering column cover. Rotate the clock spring counterclockwise until it becomes firm followed by two and a half clockwise turns to achieve alignment of the marks. Install the steering wheel assembly following inspection of the center steering wheel point and then add the steering pad and protective covers No. 3 and No. 2. The cable reconnection should proceed to the negative battery terminal followed by a verification check of steering pad and SRS warning light functionality.
