2005 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you service and repair the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2005 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Commence repair and service of the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring by first severing the battery negative cable terminal then aligning the front wheels straight ahead. Perform the service on the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring by first removing the steering wheel cover lower No.2 and No.3 then taking out the horn button assembly and steering wheel assembly with Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). Start the service by removing three screws on the lower steering column cover before taking out the upper steering column cover. The removal process requires disconnecting both connector parts from the Air Bag configuration and clock spring sub-assembly along with removing the 4 screws before extracting the clock spring sub-assembly. The clock spring sub-assembly needs inspection for any damage on the connector including scratches or cracks and all spots with cracking or denting or chip damage; if these defects are found replace the sub-assembly with a new unit. Before screwing the 4 screws to install the new clock spring sub-assembly you should disable the lock pin system if equipped and maintain straight ahead orientation of the front wheels. Connect the Air Bag connector and the connector and install the steering column cover by using its 3 screws. Towards centering the cable of the clock spring system disconnect both the ignition switch and battery negative terminal while waiting at least 90 seconds. Begin rotating the cable counterclockwise until it stops easily then advance the rotation by two and a half turns in a clockwise direction to align the reference points although the cable will continue moving another two and a half turns beyond both directions. Installation of the steering wheel assembly along with the horn button assembly should be followed by horn inspection and a check of the SRS warning light.
