2005 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Control Arm in a Front Suspension System on 2005 Scion xB?
A: The first step to replace the lower No.1 LH front suspension arm sub-assembly includes taking out the front wheels together with the hood sub-assembly and suspending the engine assembly. Proceed to separate the lower suspension arm from the steering knuckle by using Special Service Tool: 09620-00011 after unfastening the clip and nut. Seamlessly follow the same method for the RH lower No.1 using Special Service Tool: 09628-00011. Separate the front stabilizer bar starting with the step of holding the front stabilizer bolt with a spanner to remove the nut followed by removing 2 retainers with their associated cushion and front stabilizer bolt until completion on both sides. Remove the power steering link assembly through bolt and nut removal of eight components before suspending it. The removal procedure for the pressure feed tube starts with unfastening the securing bolt. Remove the front suspension member reinforcement parts from both LH and RH ports with two bolts at each position. Separate the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly after removing a bolt and 2 nuts while placing it on a jack support system then remove 4 bolts. You must remove the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH by taking 2 bolts and a nut off but do not alter the nut position. The turning torque measurement on the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH should be 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.) or less after the ball joint stud undergoes 5 back-and-forth movements and the nut will be installed. Install the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH by applying two bolts and a nut which should be temporary. The front suspension crossmember sub-assembly can be installed using Special Service Tool: 09670-00010 to align the holes followed by tightening Bolt A to 70 Nm (715 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.) and Bolt B to 116 Nm (1,180 kgf-cm, 86 ft. lbs.). Finally, install a bolt and 2 nuts that need to be torqued to 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). Attach the front suspension member reinforcement LH and RH through each side with two fasteners which need 47 Nm (480 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.) torque. Assemble the pressure feed tube with a bolt secured at 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.) before performing the same procedure with a power steering link that requires 4 bolts and 4 nuts torquing at 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.) while maintaining the nut position. Start by inserting 2 retainers along with their cushion into their designated position on the front stabilizer bar. Secure the front stabilizer bolt with a spanner during nut installation before tightening to 18 Nm (180 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). Finally, perform the same operation on the opposite side. Fit the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH to the steering knuckle using a nut tightened to 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.). Install a new clip afterwards because screwing the nut another 60° prevents misalignment. Installation requires a new step for the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 RH which duplicates the same procedure as No.1 LH. Install the front wheels first and torque them to 103 Nm before completing the full bolt tightening process of the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH with 2 bolts by applying 88 Nm to Bolt A and 132 Nm to Bolt B while avoiding any nut rotation. Close the process by adding the hood sub-assembly while inspecting its installation status and performing a front wheel alignment check.
