2005 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY REAR LH on 2005 Scion xB?
A: Start the process of SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY REAR LH replacement by discharging the rear absorber cap and separating the rear wheel. The first step includes supporting the rear axle beam using a jack then removing the 2 nuts from the piston rod before taking away the washer and upper suspension support. The shock absorber installation requires the nut and washer to be removed first while taking out the spring bumper along with the shock absorber assembly rear LH. An inspection of the shock absorber assembly requires compression and extension testing of the rod to detect abnormal resistance or unusual sounds as part of the assessment to decide on new shock absorber replacement. Begin the installation process with spring bumper followed by shock absorber then upper suspension support and washer on the body. After performing the installation with the piston rod still in hand, the lower nut should get tightened to achieve a 15 to 18 mm (0.591 to 0.709 inch) rod extension before the upper nut gets tightened to 25 Nm (255 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.) torque against the lower nut. The installation of the shock absorber onto the rear axle beam requires the washer and nut for attachment followed by torquing to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.). Finish the process by installing the rear wheel after torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.), then check the rear wheel alignment. You must discharge the gas inside the SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY REAR LH by drilling a hole into its cylinder while using proper safety equipment due to potential metal shard hazards; the gas contains no odor, color or poisonous properties.
