2005 Scion xB Shock Absorber Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to overhaul the front shock absorber with coil spring on 2005 Scion xB?
A: The first step to overhauling the front shock absorber with coil spring requires removal of the windshield wiper arm cover and then the left and right front wiper arms before taking out the hood to cowl top seal and both cowl top ventilator louvers. Disconnection of the hose and wire harness followed by bolt removal allows you to remove the windshield wiper link assembly along with the cowl top panel outer. The overhaul of the front shock absorber with coil spring requires you to start by taking off the front wheel and unfastening the flexible hose with its bolt and speed sensor wire harness clamp from the shock absorber bracket. Detach the front shock absorber with coil spring after taking it off from the steering knuckle and removing 3 nuts and proceed to separate suspension support No.2. The front shock absorber with coil spring needs to be fixed in a vise while customers must install the bracket's two nuts and bolt then compress the coil spring through Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) while avoiding damage by using an impact wrench. First remove the front suspension support dust cover before loosening the front support to front shock absorber left-hand nut and using 2 nuts and a screwdriver to maintain the front shock absorber hold and disconnecting the center nut. Proceed by taking off the front suspension support sub-assembly along with dust seal, coil spring seat upper, coil spring insulator upper, coil spring and spring bumper. The shock absorber assembly needs inspection by compressing and extending its rod while checking for strange sounds or resistance before performing a replacement. Squeeze the coil spring with the identical special service tool to position the lower end into the spring lower seat gap before you add the shock absorber assembly together with front spring bumper and coil spring. Begin installation of front coil spring insulator upper by placing its "a" mark externally while installing the front coil spring seat upper with "OUT" marking directed outwards. Set the front shock absorber left-hand nut with a new center nut through torquing it to 33 Nm (340 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.) using caution to protect suspension support stud bolts. Use the special service tool only when replacing it with MP grease on the suspension support. The front suspension support dust cover combined with the shock absorber and coil spring should be installed using three nuts to link it to the steering knuckle. Mount the 2 bolts together with a nut before tightening the nut to 132 Nm (1,350 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.) without allowing the bolt to rotate. Affix the flexible hose by torquing it to 29 Nm while completing the front wheel installation procedure with a 103 Nm torque. Repeat installation procedure for the cowl top panel outer with 8 bolts and reconnect the hose and wire harness and install the windshield wiper link assembly with both cowl top ventilator louvers and the hood to cowl top seal while installing the left and right front wiper arms. Scrutinize and adjust the front wheel alignment as the final procedure. When disposing the shock absorber assembly front left fully extend the rod and drill a hole into the cylinder for gas discharge but maintain safe equipment usage due to metal fragments and understand that the gas possesses no color or odor and is harmless to human health.
