2005 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the front shock absorber with coil spring on 2005 Scion xB?
A: The shock absorber coil spring overhaul starts with removing the windshield wiper arm cover then the left and right front wiper arms before taking out the hood to cowl top seal and both cowl top ventilator louvers. The procedure requires changing the windshield wiper link assembly and cowl top panel outer by disconnecting the hose and wire harness before removing 8 bolts. Start by taking out the front wheel followed by disconnecting the flexible hose by unbolted its retaining bolt and speed sensor wire harness clamp from shock absorber bracket. The front shock absorber must be detached from the steering knuckle by taking out 2 nuts and bolts before using 3 nuts to remove the shock absorber with coil spring and suspension support No.2. The front shock absorber with coil spring installation requires secure attachment of 2 nuts and a bolt to the bracket while placement within a vise. The coil spring compression requires Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) which must be operated without an impact wrench to prevent tool damage. Lifting the front suspension support dust cover leads to front support removal from the left-hand shock absorber nut using two nuts along with a screwdriver for the front shock absorber retention. Disassemble the front suspension support sub-assembly together with the left-hand dust seal before removing the front coil spring seat upper, front coil spring insulator upper, front coil spring and front spring bumper. Check the shock absorber assembly front resistance along with sounds during compression and extension cycles of the shock rod before replacing it when needed. Apply the same Special Service Tool to compress the front coil spring for installation onto the shock absorber before you place it into the spring lower seat gap. The "a" marker on the front coil spring insulator upper should be displayed outward before installing the front coil spring seat upper with its "OUT" label facing outward. After installing the front suspension support left-hand dust seal and the front suspension support sub-assembly the technician should attach the front support to front shock absorber left-hand nut with a new center nut before applying torque to 33 Nm using a torque wrench while being mindful of suspension support stud bolts. Mount the front suspension support dust cover following application of MP grease to the suspension support. Use suspension support No.2 to install the front shock absorber with coil spring by securing 3 nuts to 39 Nm torque and establishing a connection to the steering knuckle with two bolts secured by a nut that requires 132 Nm torque while ensuring the bolt remains still during torquing. The flexible hose installation requires 29 Nm torque pressure while you should apply 103 Nm tension to the front wheel before tightening the cowl top panel outer bolts to 5.0 Nm. The hose and wire harness need to be connected after this step. Installation of the windshield wiper link assembly will be followed by both cowl top ventilator louvers and the hood to cowl top seal, and left and right front wiper arms before examining and adjusting the front wheel alignment. The procedure to dispose of the front left shock absorber assembly requires extending the shock absorber rod before drilling a cylinder hole to vent the gas while using protective equipment against the possibility of metal fragments and noting the gas characteristics as both colorless and odorless and non-toxic.
