2004 Scion xB Coil Springs Parts Q&A
Q: How to replace the rear left coil springs on 2004 Scion xB?
A: One must remove the rear wheel prior to replacing the rear left coil spring. The skid control sensor connector requires detachment followed by removing the bolt to free up the skid control sensor wire from the axle beam. Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 allows you to disconnect rear brake tube No.4 while removing its clip that should not be used again. Another similar procedure should be performed on rear brake tube No.3. For the replacement of both parking brake cable assemblies, start by removing their nuts at the axle beam before separating the assemblies from the beam. You must take two bolts out from the rear axle beam assembly and apply jacks to stabilize both rear axle beam sides before you can remove the nut and washer to separate the shock absorber assembly rear LH. The procedure for removing the rear RH shock absorber assembly matches the preceding steps. Cautiously lower the jack when removing both the coil spring together with its upper and lower insulators from the rear LH area. The installation of the upper insulator requires fitting its gap to the end of the coil spring rear LH before installing the lower insulator alongside the coil spring to the rear axle beam with the paint mark below the vehicle. You need to temporarily hold the shock absorber assembly rear LH against the rear axle beam while the jacks are lifted. Setscrew the same process for the shock absorber assembly rear RH. Screw parking brake cable assembly No.3 to its nut while applying 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) torque and do the same for parking brake cable assembly No.2. The mechanic should connect the rear brake tube No.4 to the flexible hose by applying 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) torque while install the clip using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100. The same procedure should be applied to parking brake tube No.3. Fasten the skid control sensor wire using the bolt while applying 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) of torque then attach the wire. If the shock absorber needs stabilization then utilize a jack to lift the rear axle beam until creating 90 kg (198 lb.) of tension to reach 82 Nm (836 kgf-cm, 60 ft lbs.) of torque on the bolt. Tighten both shock absorber assembly rear LH to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) and rear RH assembly to the same value. The brake line should be bled before installing the rear wheel with 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque and inspecting the rear wheel alignment followed by speed sensor signal inspection.
