2006 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the rear shock absorber on 2006 Scion xB?
A: Service of the rear shock absorber starts with removing the rear absorber cap followed by taking off the rear wheel. A jack should be used to support the axle beam while you maintain grip on the pinion rod to remove its 2 nuts and eventually the cushion retainer and suspension support. The procedure starts with separating the shock absorber assembly from its nut and spacer then breaking the suspension support from the absorber. The inspection of the rear shock absorber assembly includes rod compression and extension to checks for resistance issues or noise problems; if cases of irregularity occur the shock absorber requires immediate replacement with a new one. Position the suspension support on the shock absorber before installing shock absorber pieces together with suspension support and cushion retainer to the body structure. Install the lower nut on the piston rod with sufficient length to reach 15 to 18 mm (0.59 to 0.71 inch) from the nut surface before adding the upper nut to achieve 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs. torque to the lower nut. You must install the shock absorber to the axle beam with the spacer along with the nut before you apply torque at 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.). Reattach the rear wheel before torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) To dispose of the rear shock absorber assembly extend the shock absorber rod and use appropriate safety gear while drilling through the cylinder between points A and B to let gas air out because metal pieces will escape during this process even though the gas has no smell or color and is harmless.
