2006 Scion xB Shock Absorber Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the front shock absorber with coil spring on 2006 Scion xB?
A: Begin front shock absorber with coil spring service and repair by taking off the windshield wiper arm cover followed by removing both front wiper arms and the hood to cowl top seal and the cowl top ventilator louvers from both sides before proceeding to remove the windshield wiper link assembly and the cowl top panel outer while disconnecting the hose and wire harness from the wiper before removing the 8 bolts. Before starting the front wheel replacement process disconnect the flexible hose by unfastening both the bolt and speed sensor wire clamp from the shock absorber bracket. Unravel the shock absorber assembly with coil spring by disconnecting it from the steering knuckle by removing its 2 nuts and 2 bolts, then take off the 3 nuts and shock absorber and then remove the No. 2 suspension support. To disassemble front shock absorbers with coil springs safely place them in a vise by using 2 bolts and 2 nuts along with Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031). Regular impact wrenches must not be used to protect tool integrity. The disassembly begins with removing the front suspension support dust cover and the front support to front shock absorber LH nut while keeping these two components stable through the use of two nuts and a screwdriver. Also maintain caution around the suspension support stud bolts. Proceed by taking out the front suspension support sub-assembly LH followed by removing the front suspension support LH dust seal together with the front coil spring seat upper LH and front coil spring insulator upper LH as well as the front coil spring LH and front spring bumper LH. Then install the front shock absorber assembly LH. To assess the front shock absorber assembly LH you must compress and extend the shock absorber rod for inspection of resistance deviations while listening for unusual noises before replacement. Installation of the front shock absorber assembly LH proceeds after front spring bumper LH and front coil spring LH using Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) to compress coil spring for proper lower end insertion into the spring lower seat gap. The complete front suspension sub-assembly installation requires the front coil spring insulator upper LH to be placed with the mark facing outward followed by the front coil spring seat upper LH which should have the "OUT" mark directed outward. Next, add the front suspension support LH dust seal and the front suspension support sub-assembly LH. Fix the front support to the front shock absorber LH nut with a new center nut that requires 33 Nm (340 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.) torque before applying MP grease to the suspension support and installing its dust cover LH. Installation of the front shock absorber with coil spring requires you to install the No. 2 suspension support then secure the shock absorber with 3 nuts tightened to 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.) and connect it to the steering knuckle and install 2 bolts and a nut by ensuring the bolt stays stationary during nut torquing to 132 Nm (1,350 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.). After installing the flexible hose with 29 Nm torque (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) you can proceed to torques the front wheels to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) while torquing 8 cowl top panel outer holes to 5.0 Nm tension (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.) before restoring the hose and wire harness to the wiper. The procedure requires installation of the windshield wiper link assembly and both cowl top ventilator louvers and the hood to cowl top seal followed by installation of both front wiper arms. Afterward, check and adjust the front wheel alignment. The front shock absorber assembly disposal requires shock absorber rod extension followed by drilling a hole between points A and B on the cylinder to release gas content while using safety equipment due to flying metal debris and noting the harmless gas composition.
