2006 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the Control Arm in the Front Suspension No. 1 for an Automatic Transaxle on 2006 Scion xB?
A: The procedure for servicing the Front Suspension No. 1 Lower Arm for Automatic Transaxle starts with removing the front wheel and hood sub-assembly followed by suspending the engine assembly. You must separate the left front suspension No. 1 lower arm sub-assembly through removal of its clip and nut and use Special Service Tool: 09628-00011 to disconnect the lower arm from the steering knuckle. You should perform this same procedure on the right side of the assembly. Move to the next step where you hold a spanner on the front stabilizer bolt to remove the nut before taking out the 2 retainers and cushion followed by the front stabilizer bolt. Do this procedure again on the other side. Remove and disconnect the power steering link assembly through removal of the four bolts and four nuts while maintaining the steering link in suspension. To start the procedure disconnect the pressure feed tube assembly bolt before removing the 2 bolts used to fasten the front suspension member reinforcement on both sides of the vehicle. Temporarily support the crossmember with a jack after unscrewing its bolt and 2 nuts and finally remove the 4 bolts. You must remove the 2 bolts with the accompanying nut and lower arm from the left front suspension No. 1 lower arm sub-assembly without rotating the nut. Install the nut on the left front suspension No. 1 lower arm sub-assembly after flipping the ball joint stud 5 times in both directions before screwing it with a torque wrench at a rate of 2 to 4 seconds until taking torque readings on the fifth turn. First attach the left front suspension No. 1 lower arm sub-assembly with its 2 bolts and nut before aligning the holes of the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly with Special Service Tool: 09670-00010. Installation proceeds with torquing bolt A to 70 Nm (715 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.) & B to 116 Nm (1,180 kgf-cm, 86 ft. lbs.) then finishing with bolt and 2 nut torque of 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). Each left and right front suspension member reinforcement requires two bolts that need torquing to 47 Nm (480 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.). Integrate the pressure feed tube assembly to its bolt through a torque of 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.), before connecting the power steering link assembly through 4 bolts and 4 nuts with 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.). The front stabilizer bar assembly requires installation of two retainers with cushion before using a wrench to bolt the stabilizer then torquing the nut to 18 Nm (180 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) while repeating the procedure on opposite. The left front suspension No. 1 lower arm sub-assembly should connect to the steering knuckle by tightening the nut until it reaches 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.) torque value. Next, install a new clip while aligning the holes and torque the nut up to 60 degrees if needed. Finally attach the front wheel by torquing to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Screw the left front suspension No. 1 lower arm sub-assembly with its 2 bolts while torquing bolt A to 88 Nm (900 kgf-cm, 65 ft. lbs.) and bolt B to 132 Nm (1,350 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.). Avoid rotating the nut during this process. By finishing the installation process you should install the hood sub-assembly then check and adjust it before checking and adjusting the front wheel alignment.
