2002 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Replace the Crankshaft Seal on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
A: The first step to replace the crankshaft main bearing seal involves removing the automatic transaxle assembly through an easier path after disassembling the engine with its transaxle. The drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly removal process begins by fixing the crankshaft with Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 then unfasten the 8 bolts, rear spacer, drive plate, and front spacer. A screwdriver with taped tip must be used for prying out the engine rear oil seal after first cutting off its lip with a knife. After removal inspect the crankshaft for any damage then repair it using sandpaper with a grade of #400. For new engine rear oil seal installation professionals must apply MP grease to the lip before utilizing Special Service Tool: 09223-15030, 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a hammer to tap in the oil seal until it reaches the same height as the rear oil seal retainer edge followed by grease removal from the crankshaft surface. Reassemble the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly by clamping the crankshaft with Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 while you clean the bolts and bolt holes, fill 2 or 3 threads of the bolt end with adhesive (Part No. 08833-00070, THREE BOND or equivalent) and evenly tighten the 8 bolts following the specified sequence to reach a torque of 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.). The automatic transaxle assembly should be reinstalled after these steps.
