2001 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Replace a Crankshaft Seal on 2001 Toyota Highlander?
A: The first step to change the crankshaft main bearing seal involves removing the automatic transaxle assembly [30500 / 98-45] when the engine assembly with transaxle has been extracted. After securing the crankshaft with Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 you can take out the 8 bolts and then remove the rear spacer, drive plate and front spacer. Your next step is to block the crankshaft and eliminate the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly [32101 / 98-46]. Remove the engine rear oil seal [11401L / 98-7] through knife cuts on the oil seal lip followed by screwdriver prying which has taped tip. Inspection of the crankshaft should happen after removal so any detected damage requires smoothing with sandpaper (#400). Install the oil seal by applying MP grease to its lip after removing debris and using Special Service Tool: 09223-15030 and 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a hammer to tap in the oil seal until its surface reaches the same height as the rear oil seal retainer edge before wiping off excess grease from the crankshaft. To reinstall the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly [32101 / 98-46] the technician should use Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to fix the crankshaft while cleaning the bolt and bolt hole and applying adhesive (Part No. 08833-00070, THREE BOND or equivalent) to 2 or 3 threads of the bolt end before installing and uniformly tightening the 8 bolts in the specified sequence to a torque of 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.). The automatic transaxle assembly [30500 / 98-45] needs reinstallation as the last step.
