How to service and repair the upper control arm on 2001 Toyota 4Runner?

You should start the upper control arm service and repair process by taking off the shock absorber and coil spring first. Disengage the ABS speed sensor wire harness by unwiring the clamp and apply 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) torque. The upper ball joint needs to be disconnected through removal of the cotter pin and nut loosening to a torque of 105 Nm (1,100 kgf-cm, 80 ft. lbs.) after which the disconnect process can begin using Special Service Tool: 09950-40011 (09951-04010, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04031, 09958-04011) while supporting the steering knuckle properly before removing the nut. Before reinstalling replace the upper suspension arm by removing its components including the nut and bolt along with washers at a torque of 115 Nm (1,200 kgf-cm, 87 ft. lbs.) after stabilizing the suspension. The bushing removal begins with using a chisel and hammer to lift the flange and ends with the use of Special Service Tools: 09613-26010, 09631-20060, 09950-00020 along with a press to extract it. Apply the combination of special service tools 09223-00010, 09506-35010 followed by a press for new bushing installation. Front wheel alignment must be checked after finishing installation which is done in the opposite sequence of removal.
