Toyota Matrix Parking Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the parking brake shoe on Toyota Matrix?
A: The parking brake shoe overhaul process requires removal of the rear wheel along with disconnecting the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH before disc removal; if disc removal proves challenging the shoe should be adjusted to enable wheel movement. A brake drum gauge should be used to check the inside diameter of the brake disc to ensure it falls between 173 mm (6.81 inch) and 174 mm (6.85 inch). The parking brake shoe strut LH requires detachment by releasing the two upper side tension springs with needle-nose pliers followed by removal of the strut. The process next requires removal of the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set using needle-nose pliers to detach the anchor side tension spring followed by removing the screw set. The parking brake shoe assembly LH No.1 requires Special Service Tool: 09718-00010 for removing the hold-down compression spring together with the hold-down spring pin and the assembly itself. The procedure should also be performed for parking brake shoe assembly LH No.2 until it is freed from parking brake shoe lever LH. Use a ruler to check that shoe lining thickness complies with 3.5 mm (0.138 inch) standard while maintaining a minimum of 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Apply chalk to any inside disc surface where brake disc meets shoe lining before grinding the lining with a brake shoe grinder or replacing the assembly when contact remains improper. Operation of the parking brake shoe lever LH requires disconnecting the Parking Brake Cable assembly No.3 to remove it. High-temperature grease needs to be applied to the shoe attached surface of the backing plate before reinstalling the parking brake shoe lever LH while connecting the parking brake cable assembly No.3. To install parking brake shoe assembly LH No.2 the technician must use Special Service Tool: 09718-00010 and high-temperature grease on the lever contact before inserting all parts including the hold-down compression spring and hold-down spring pin. The same procedure should be followed for the installation of parking brake shoe assembly LH No.1. High-temperature grease must be applied to the adjusting bolt and support piece before installing the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set LH together with the tension spring through the use of needle-nose pliers. Activate the parking brake shoe strut LH by applying high-temperature grease to contact parts followed by embedding the two side tension springs into their designed grooves. Verify all installation parts fit correctly without any oil or grease present on either the disc or shoe lining friction surfaces. Install the rear disc then perform brake shoe clearance adjustment by installing the hub nuts temporarily but remove the hole plug while expanding the shoes until lock occurs and the adjuster should reach 8 notches while the disc rotates without drag before putting back the hole plug. To conclude the process you should link the LH rear disc brake caliper assembly followed by installing the rear wheel at 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque while inspecting the parking brake lever travel for final adjustments.
