    Q:
How to overhaul the Parking Brake Shoe on Scion tC? Posted by Customer
    A:
The first step of parking brake assembly overhaul requires wheel removal and disconnecting of rear disc brake caliper assembly LH. To take off the rear disc you should free the parking brake while marking both disc and axle hub. McGraw should adjust the shoe until the wheel rotates without resistance when the disc proves difficult to remove. Measuring the inside diameter of the brake disc requires a brake drum gauge which should be within 173 mm (6.81 inch) of the standard and not exceeding 174 mm (6.85 inch). The process of parking brake shoe strut LH removal starts by undoing the two return tension springs with needle-nose pliers followed by unfastening the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set. Special Service Tool 09718-00010 should be used for removing the holddown compression spring and spring pin which connects to the parking brake shoe lever LH. Use a ruler to check the shoe lining thickness until it reaches 3.2 mm (0.126 inch) without dropping below the minimum requirement of 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Apply chalk to the brake disc to verify contact with the shoes while grinding the lining according to necessity. Detach the parking brake shoe lever LH from its position by disconnecting parking brake cable assembly No.3. The shoe attaching surface of the backing plate requires high temperature grease before reattaching the parking brake shoe lever LH and parking brake shoe assembly LH No.2, with a special service tool 09718-00010 to assist installation. The parking brake shoe adjusting screw set LH needs installation while lubricating the adjusting bolt and support piece before installing the return tension spring. Place grease on the contact section of the parking brake shoe strut LH before installing it while securing the return tension springs. All parts need to be verified for proper installation so oil and grease cannot reach the friction surfaces. The installer should adjust the parking brake shoe clearance by first installing the hub nuts temporarily and removing the hole plug before reaching the desired shoe setting through disc locking motions followed by adjusting the adjuster for smooth rotation. Secure the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH bolts at 47 Nm (479 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.) along with the rear wheel at 103 Nm (1.050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Settle the parking brake shoes alongside the disc by driving at 50 km/h (31 mph) speed using a 98 N (10 kgf, 22 lbs.) force on the parking brake lever across 400-meter (0.25 mile) stretches two or three times before checking and adjusting brake lever travel.

    Q:
What is the procedure to settle the parking brake shoes and disc for the 2002 Toyota Celica? Posted by Customer
    A:
Drive the vehicle at about 50 km/h (31 mph) on a safe, level, dry road, pulling on the lever with 98 N (10 kgf, 19.8 ft. lbs.) of force while the parking brake release button is pushed in, and repeat this for about 400 meters (0.25 mile) two or three times.
