Toyota Highlander Trailing Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the trailing arm on Toyota Highlander?
A: The rear wheel needs to be removed first before performing service and repairs on the trailing arm of both 2WD and 4WD vehicles. Support the rear axle carrier with a jack and detach the Parking Brake Cable before removing the strut rod assembly rear by disconnecting the strut rod from the front side while ensuring the nut stays fixed. Proceed by taking away the strut rod from the rear axle carrier yet maintain control of the nut to prevent rotation. Install the rear strut rod with attached bolt and nut onto the rear position just right of where it needs to be placed before supporting the rear axle and connecting the rod on its inner side with another bolt and nut. Tighten all components temporarly before proceeding. Use wood blocking during suspension stabilization to stabilize the rear axle carrier and maintain the installed bolt of the suspension arm assembly No.1 at a horizontal angle matched with the center of the rear axle hub for 2WD or the rear Drive Shaft assembly for 4WD. Install the parking brake cable while tightening the bolt to 39 Nm and the nut to 6.0 Nm. Following this, fully tighten the rear bolts for the strut rod assembly to 80 Nm. The last steps include completing the installation of the rear wheel followed by a 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque specification before visually checking the rear wheel alignment.
