2008 Toyota Tundra Rack And Pinion Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to install the power Rack And Pinion assembly on 2008 Toyota Tundra?
A: The power steering rack and pinion assembly should be installed using two bolts along with two nuts at a torquing value of 120 Nm (1224 kgf-cm or 89 ft-lbf). Apply the power steering rack and pinion pressure feed tube temporarily before securing its clamp with 2 bolts torqued to 31 Nm (316 kgf-cm, 23 ft-lbf). Tighten the pressure feed tube at its pressure feed tube side with a union nut wrench to 22 Nm (227 kgf-cm, 16 ft-lbf) or 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft-lbf) while maintaining wrench perpendicularity to the torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 300 mm (11.8 in.). Apply the same pressure tube attachment procedure to the return tube section. Fasten the left tie rod end to the rack and pinion knuckle using a 69 Nm torque and place a new cotter pin on it before adjusting the nut up to 60 degrees when alignment is needed. Perform this identical process also on the right tie rod end. The installation of the bolt requires a torque of 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft-lbf) after aligning the matchmarks between the No. 2 rack and pinion intermediate shaft and power steering rack and pinion. After reattaching the negative power cable you should install the No. 1 engine under cover and front wheel while keeping in mind that system initialization may be required in some cases. Perform a power steering fluid bleed then measure fluid level and search for fluid leakage at all points. Position the front wheels directly forward before the adjustment using vehicle jacks or positioning the vehicle properly. Adjust front wheel alignment when necessary.
